Devon & Cornwall

Featured Replies

We visit parts of the English Counties of Devon and Cornwall.

We depart from Thruxton (EGHO) and visit Compton Abbas (EGHA) and Yeovilton (EGDY). We continue to the southwest and overfly Hemyrock Castle. Almost all POI are part of the ORBX GB South Region and may not be in the default simulator (whatever version). I included them anyway, the scenery is well worth a visit even without castles. We land at Dunkeswell (EGTU) and continue to reach Exeter (EGTE). Now the course leads us to many castles along the River Dart and then along the coastline. We land at Salcombe (EGZY) and Plymouth (EGHD). Plymouth Airport closed and ceased all operations on 23 December 2011. Since then it has been mothballed with the aviation infrastructure and navigation aids retained pending an attempt by the leaseholder to change the use of the site in planning so that it can be disposed of for residential development. Following the coast, we overfly a couple of castles and land at Culdrose Navy (EGDR). Our destination today is Lands End Airport (EGHC). On the way we follow the coast and visit some more POI. The most famous one is probably St Michael's Mount. The island is a civil parish linked to the town of Marazion by a causeway of granite setts, passable (as is the beach) between mid-tide and low water. The National Trust manages it, and the castle and chapel have been the home of the St Aubyn family since around 1650. Historically, St Michael's Mount was an English counterpart of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, a tidal island with a similar conical shape, though Mont-Saint-Michel is much taller. St Michael's Mount is one of 43 unbridged tidal islands accessible by foot from mainland Britain. Part of the island was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1995 for its geology. Sea height can vary by up to around 5 meters (16 ft) between low and high tide.

The flight has 233 miles and 7 landings. We want to cruise at about 160 knots. I will probably be in the BlackSquare analog Bonanza. As always, please fly what you like.

The flight plans are available here.

Thruxton and Compton Abbas are available as payware from ORBX.

The complete package is available here.

We try real weather. Please set your simulator for a 1 PM local departure.

The flight was planned for MSFS 2020. Feel free to join with MSFS 2024.
