Germany's Far West: The Eifel Region

Featured Replies

We fly in the southwestern part of Germany and visit the Eifel Region The Eifel lies between the cities of Aachen to the north, Trier to the south, and Koblenz to the east. It descends northeast along a line from Aachen via Düren to Bonn into the Lower Rhine Bay. In the east and south, it is bounded by the Rhine and the Moselle valleys. To the west, it transitions in Belgium and Luxembourg into the geologically related Ardennes and the Luxembourg Ösling. In the north, it is limited by the Jülich-Zülpicher Börde. Within Germany, it lies within the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. Its highest point is the volcanic cone of the Hohe Acht (746.9 m).

We depart from La Sauveniere (EBSP) in Belgium and turn east to overfly the Eifel National Park. We land at Düren-Huertgenwald (EDIR). Now we turn southeast and from Waypoint 4 until we reach our next landing Bad Neuenahr (EDRA) we follow the valley of the River Ahr, where the severe flooding happened in July 2021. Further southeast we reach Winningen (EDRK), and from here we follow the River Mosel south and overfly the Geierlay Suspension Bridge. The pedestrian-only bridge was opened in 2015 and has a span range of 360 meters (1,180 ft) and is up to 100 meters (330 ft) above ground. Now we head back towards the river and overly Castle Cochem. According to current castle research, the complex, which served as a customs castle in the Middle Ages, was probably built around 1100 or in the first half of the 12th century. After it was destroyed in the 17th century, the Berlin merchant and later Privy Councillor of Commerce Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené had it rebuilt between 1868 and 1877. Following the taste of castle romanticism, Cochem Castle was designed in the neo-Gothic style during historicism.

Next, we land at the German Air Force Base Buechel (ETSB). We head east and follow the River Mosel south until we land at Mont Real (EDRM). We continue to follow the River Mosel and make stops at Trier Fohren (EDRT) and Konz (EDKX) before we follow the River Saar south to land at Saarlouis (EDRJ).

We overfly the city and the Saar Polygon. Coal has been mined over several centuries in the German State of Saarland. At times, the industry was the largest employer in the region. In June 2012, the last coal mine, Bergwerk Saar, was closed. Since then, there has been no more coal mining in the Saarland. Nevertheless, the history of the coal mining industry, along with its associated traditions, is part of the region's heritage. The purpose of the monument is to promote the cultural heritage of mining with the establishment of a landmark that celebrates the contribution that the miners had to the region. We overfly the city of Saarbruecken and finish the flight at Zweibruecken (EDRZ).

The flight has 220 miles and 8 landings. We want to cruise at about 150 knots. I will probably be in the COWS DA 42. Please fly, what you like. The shortest runway has a length of about 1600 feet!

The flight plans are here.
