Visiting Australia: New South Wales I

Featured Replies

We continue our tour along the east coast of Australia.

We are now in New South Wales and depart from Ballina (YBNA). We follow the coast south for the whole trip to finish the flight at Williamston (YWLM). Enroute, we make stops at Evans Head (YEVD), Grafton (YGFN), Coffs Harbour (YCFS), Port Macquarie (YPMQ), and Taree (YTRE). We see two POIs: the Big Prawn near Ballina and the Big Banana near Coffs Harbour. Coffs Harbour's economy was once based on timber and agriculture. Over recent decades, tourism has become an increasingly important industry for the city. Once part of a region known as the Bananacoast, today the tourist city is part of a wider region known as the Coffs Coast and the Big Banana remembers the importance of the fruit for the area. Additionally, it is the symbol of the Big Banana Fun Park. Amusement park.

In Port Macquarie, Grace Easterbrook, a retired secretary from Scotland, began a campaign in the 1970s against the high-rise developments multiplying up the coast. She led a group of citizen activists in lobbying against a large development on Windmill Hill and other efforts to conserve the coast. In 1974, residents of Port Macquarie requested that the Builders Labourers Federation place a green ban against the construction of high-rise buildings on beachhead and waterfront. Easterbrook died in 1984, before the culmination of her conservation efforts, the beautiful coastal walks, were completed. The RAAF Base dominates Williamstown.

The flight is 262 miles long and has 5 landings. I will be in the A2A Comanche. As always, please fly what you like.

The flight plans are here.
