Along the River Duoro

Featured Replies

We fly from the Atlantic Coast to Madrid, Spain's capital city, mostly along the River Duoro.

We depart from Vigo (LEVX) at the northwest coast of the Iberian Peninsula. We turn south and quickly cross into Portugal. Our first landing is at Braga (LPBR). Braga is among the most noted entrepreneurial and technological centers of the country, as well as a major hub for inland Northern Portugal.

We turn to the coast and reach Porto. We land at the International Airport Francisco Sa Carneiro (LPPR). Porto is one of the most important urban areas on the Iberian Peninsula and Portugal’s second-largest urban area. Port wine, one of Portugal's most famous exports, is named after Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the packaging, transport, and export of fortified wine.

After departure, we head south and then follow the River Duoro inland. On the way, there are several bridges needing inspection. Until reaching our next stop we follow the scenic river valley. We land at Vila Real (LPVR), one of Portugal's most liveable cities. We continue to follow the Duoro and land at Mogaduoro (LPMU). Now we head south and cross the border to Spain.

We make a touch-and-go at El Maillo (LEMV). After departure, we cross the mountains southbound and then turn east to fly along the Parque Regional de la Sierra de Gredos. We make another touch-and-go at El Tietar (LETI).

We continue east and overfly scenic Madrid. Among the POI of Madrid, we overfly the Palacio Real de Madrid, the Estanque Grande de El Retiro, and the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, home of Real Madrid. We finish the flight at Madrid’s International Airport Barajas (LEMD).

The flight has a length of 390 miles, 5 landings, and two touch-and-goes. We want to cruise at about 220 knots. I will probably be in the OV-10 Bronco, please fly what you like.

Flight plans are here.

I checked the freeware addons for both, MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, and all worked fine. As payware, we have LEVX and LPPR for MSFS 2020. Both look very good in MSFS 2024 as well.

We try real weather. Please set your simulator for 11:00 am departure.
