February 17, 20251 yr We discover the beauty of the French Island of Corsica. We depart from Corte (LFKT), a small mountain village. It was once the capital of the independent state of Corsica. We head for the coast and land at Alzitone (LFKG). The Réservoir d'Alzitone is an important source of water for the area. We follow the coast south and overfly Solenzara AB(LFKS), a French Air and Space Force (Armée de l'air et de l'espace) base. It is a NATO tactical training center, hosting the Escadron d'Hélicoptères 1/44 Solenzara with the Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma and not useable in the simulator. We overfly the coastal mountains to reach the southernmost part of the island and then turn north to land at Figari/Sud Corse (LFKF). It is Corsica's third-largest airport. About 13 miles northwest we land at Popriano (LFKO) and then continue to land at Campo Dell'Oro (LFKJ), Ajaccio's airport. Today the airport is named after Ajaccio's most famous inhabitant, Napoleon Bonaparte. His house is now a museum. The city began to prosper again after the Genoese built a citadel in 1492, to the south of the earlier settlement. After the Corsican Republic was declared in 1755, the Genoese continued to hold several citadels, including Ajaccio, until the French took control of the island. Since the middle of the 20th century, Ajaccio has seen significant development. The city has seen population growth and considerable urban sprawl. Today Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica and the main town of the island and seeks to establish itself as a true regional centre. Ajaccio was a hotspot for violence during the violent unrest in March 2022. We continue north over the mountains and reach St. Catherine (LFKC), serving the city of Calvi. According to legend, Christopher Columbus supposedly came from Calvi, which at the time was part of the Genoese Empire. Because the often subversive elements of the island gave its inhabitants a bad reputation, he would have been expected to mask his exact birthplace. During the war with Revolutionary France, British forces under Admiral Nelson and Lieutenant-General Charles Stuart captured the city in the Siege of Calvi in 1794. It was during the bombardment of Calvi that Nelson sustained the injury that cost him his eye. The town was retaken by Corsicans the following year. Now we head for the northernmost point of Corsica, Cape Corse, and then turn south to land at today's destination Poretta (LFKB), Bastia's airport. Bastia is the principal port of the island and its principal commercial town and is known for its wines. The flight has a length of 204 miles and 5 landings. We want to cruise at about 130 knots. I will be in the A2A Comanche, please fly what you like. The flight plans are here. Recommended scenery: Ajaccio (LFKJ) Figari (LFKF) Corte (LFKT) Bastia (for 2020, but works in 2024) and Calvi (for 2024, but works in 2020) are available as payware from/via ORBX.
