Palo Duro Canyon

Featured Replies

Today we fly around in the Texas Panhandle, and later cross over into New Mexico.

We depart from Lubbock (KLBB) and head northeast for our first landing at Floydada (41F). Upon hitting more interesting terrain, we continue northeast and turn north to land at Silverton (79XS).

Now we enter the area of the Palo Duro Canyon. The Palo Duro Canyon is a canyon system of the Caprock Escarpment located in the Texas Panhandle near the cities of Amarillo and Canyon. The second largest canyon system in the United States, it is roughly 25–40 mi (40–64 km) long and has an average width of 6 mi (9.7 km) but reaches a width of 20 mi (32 km) at places. Its depth is around 800 ft (240 m), but in some locations, the valley bottom to surrounding hills increases to 1,000 ft (300 m). Palo Duro Canyon (from the Spanish meaning "hard stick") has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas" both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls, which are similar to those in the Grand Canyon.

We leave the canyon and land at River Falls (H81). We head north for a few miles to overfly Amarillo and then head west to New Mexico. We land at Tucumari (KTCC), San Miguel Ranch (NM53), Las Vegas (KLVS), Santa Fe (KSAF), and Los Alamos (KLAM) before finishing the flight at Taos (KSKX).

The flight has 421 miles and 8 landings. We want to cruise at about 300 knots. The PC-21, MB-339, or any other aircraft around that speed range would be fine. When selecting a jet aircraft, don't forget to ask for the Bush variant. I will probably be in the IFE MB-339, please fly what you like.

The flight plans are here.

Recommended scenery: KLBB is available as payware from ORBX, and there are 6 freeware sceneries available as freeware:

KLBB Lubbock

H81 River Falls

KLVS Las Vegas

KSAF Santa Fe

KLAM Los Alamos

KSKX Taos

Please set your simulator for a 09:00 am local departure. We try real weather.
