June 24, 2025Jun 24 We continue our flights in Brazil. We depart from Piracicaba (SDPW) and head east. Piracicaba is a key industrial hub in the region and home to several universities. Beyond its economic significance, Piracicaba is a prominent cultural center in its region. The Central Mill, a former sugarcane mill, is now a protected historical and cultural site, serving as a venue for cultural, artistic, and recreational activities. Our first landing is at Americana (SDAI), and after departure, we reach the first POI, the Moinho Povos Unidos, a typical Dutch windmill. The Holambra Mill was built over 20 months under the direct supervision of Dutch architect Jan Heijdra, who was responsible for the project and one of the few specialists in windmill construction worldwide. During the construction, Jan Heijdra, then 82 years old and residing in the Netherlands — where he had already built and renovated approximately 400 mills — visited Brazil several times exclusively to oversee the project. It was inaugurated on July 12, 2008, as part of the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Dutch immigration to Holambra, which welcomed its first immigrants from the Netherlands to the former Ribeirão farm in July 1948. Heading south, we overfly the Sirius Particle Accelerator and land at Amarais (SDAM). After departure, we fly over the Campinas, Brazil Mormon Temple, and land at Campinas' International Airport Viracopos (SBKP). Campinas means grass fields in Portuguese and refers to its characteristic landscape. It originally comprised large stretches of dense subtropical forests (mato grosso or thick woods in Portuguese), mainly along the many rivers, interspersed with gently rolling hills covered by low-lying vegetation. We head south and arrive at Jundiai (SBJD), where last Sunday's flight ended. We head east again and land at Estadual Arthur Siqueira (SBBP). Some climbing is required to reach our next stop, Monte Verde (SNEJ). Now we head back to the coast and land at São José dos Campos (SBSJ). The city is one of the leading industrial and research centers with an emphasis on aerospace sciences in Latin America. Being the second most populous non-capital city in Brazil, behind Campinas, São José dos Campos lies in the middle of the Expanded Metropolitan Complex ("Complexo Metropolitano Expandido"), the first megalopolis in the Southern Hemisphere, with over thirty million inhabitants. The city's metro area includes Greater São Paulo, Campinas, Santos, and Sorocaba. Upon reaching the coast, we turn east once more and finish the flight at Ubatuba (SDUB). Ubatuba is an important tourist city, receiving tourists from many parts of Brazil, and is served by Gastão Madeira Airport. Ubatuba features over 100 beaches. It has been a nature preserve since March 22, 1977. Ubatuba is considered, by law, "The Surf Capital of São Paulo State". The city has received this honor because more than ten important surf contests are held off its beaches every year, including two world qualifying series, two Super Surf Pro series, and other competitions supported by such well-established brands as Billabong, Quiksilver, and Dunkelvolk (which sponsored the 2009 edition of Ubatuba Surf Contest with more than 120 athletes).
