August 4, 2025Aug 4 We explore six West African Countries. We start in Senegal, which is often called the "Gateway to Africa." It's a predominantly Muslim country with a rich culture and a friendly vibe, known for its music, hospitality, and the legacy of Léopold Sédar Senghor. French is widely spoken, and Islam is the dominant religion. The landscapes range from Sahelian plains to Atlantic beaches. Our departure airport is Kaolack (GOOK), a major regional hub and a big deal for Senegal's peanut trade. It's located on the Saloum River and has a great market scene. It is also a center for a major branch of Islam, with a huge mosque just outside the city. Next up, we cross into The Gambia, Africa’s smallest mainland country, nestled within Senegal. English is the official language, and the Gambia River runs through its heart. Known for birdwatching and friendly locals. The Gambia has beautiful beaches and is a popular tourist destination. We land at Banjul (GBYD), the capital. This city is home to some interesting spots like Arch 22, which is an iconic archway, and the Gambia National Museum. Moving on, we arrive at Guinea-Bissau. It's a country with a lot of rivers, stunning coastlines, and a Portuguese-speaking culture. It’s one of the least-visited nations in Africa, which makes it feel untouched. We stop at the capital, Bissau (GGOV), a city with a mix of old and new. Highlights are the old city with its colonial-style houses, the Fortaleza de São José da Amura, which used to be a Portuguese headquarters, or the architecture of the Bissau Cathedral. The people here are known to be super friendly. They speak a mix of Creole, Portuguese, and local languages. The Bissagos Islands nearby are a biodiversity hotspot. The next country is Guinea. This country has a varied landscape and a strong cultural heritage. It has rich mineral resources and a strong musical tradition. French is the official language, and the culture is deeply rooted in ethnic diversity. We arrive at Kamsar (GUKR), which is a port city on the Nunez River. It is a major player in the world's bauxite production. The city has a distinct feel, with a mix of mosques and churches. It’s a planned city with good infrastructure and a strong industrial presence. We continue and head to the capital, Conakry (GUCY). It's a vibrant, bustling city with the Conakry Grand Mosque, one of the biggest in West Africa. Our next country is Sierra Leone, a country with a powerful history and some of the most beautiful, untouched beaches. The capital is a city with a deep story. English is spoken, and the people are famously warm and welcoming. We land at Freetown (GFLL), a city built on resilience and heritage. It was founded by freed slaves, and the town shows its history in its colorful houses and unique culture. Famous are the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the Cotton Tree. But the main attractions are the gorgeous beaches on the Freetown Peninsula. The last country on today's trip is Liberia, a country with a unique history as the first independent African republic, founded by freed American slaves. English is the official language, and the country is rebuilding with optimism. We finish the flight at the capital, Monrovia (GLMR), a city with a very American-influenced past, visible in some of its architecture. Monrovia is a city that is rebuilding and has a lot of energy, with a mix of Americo-Liberian and indigenous cultures. The flight is 610 miles long with 5 landings. Any business jet is suitable. I will be in the PC-24. Please fly what you like. Flight plans are here. There is a complete plan and a single flight plan for each leg. When available, I included a STAR and/or an approach.
