(SOLVED) How to walk around outside the plane properly

I know this must be a simple thing but I am having the hardest time with it. I don't have any problem getting out of the plane. But I have the 3rd person option turned on and I can never find myself anywhere once outside the plane. I don't know where I am. 

I hit various keyboard keys to move around and the scene perspective changes but 1) I cannot find myself anywhere, and 2) I can't seem to do any of the walkaround stuff like the pitot cover and the chocks, etc. I seem to be near them but nothing works.

I am assuming I have something simple set up wrong but I don't know what.

If I hit Escape and go back to the menu, I can my avatar in the background so I know it's there. But as soon as I go back to the scene I cannot find me. It's so weird, it's like I am just outside the scene.

UPDATE: I played with some of the sim settings and then checked some keyboard binds and finally got it working :-)
