Mountains, Castles, and Castles on Mountains

Featured Replies

We continue our flights over the Carpathian Mountains

We depart from Poprad (LZTT), in the valley of the Poprad River, nestled between the magnificent High and Low Tatra mountains. Poprad is a vital hub for tourism and transportation in the region, serving as a gateway to the stunning peaks of the High Tatras. The city itself has a rich history, with its origins tracing back to the 13th century when German colonists settled it. A notable suburb, Spišská Sobota, boasts a 13th-century Gothic church and a square lined with Renaissance and Baroque houses, a testament to the area's architectural heritage. Our first POI is Orava Castle, a magnificent structure clinging to a rocky crag above the Orava River. This castle's history is a story of continuous construction, destruction, and reconstruction. Originally a wooden fortification, its stone foundations date to the 13th century. It has seen various architectural styles, from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Neo-Gothic. The castle gained international fame as a filming location for the 1922 silent film Nosferatu, where it stood in as Count Orlok's Transylvanian stronghold. Today, it operates as a museum, one of the oldest in Slovakia, showcasing the region's history and the life of its nobility.

Next, we turn south and descend to Ružomberok (LURU), the administrative and cultural heart of the Liptov region. The city is an important center for the paper industry and tourism. Its strategic location at the crossroads of ancient trade routes has profoundly shaped its economic and cultural development. The city's historical square is dominated by the late-Gothic Church of St. Andrew and a Renaissance bell tower.  From Ružomberok, we follow the river valley to Lubochna, turn south, and cross the mountains to Sliač (LZSL), a small spa town renowned for its healing hot springs. The town's history is ancient, with archaeological evidence of settlement dating back to 2000 BCE. It is also historically significant for its role during the Slovak National Uprising of World War II, when its airport, then known as Letisko Tri Duby ("Three-Oaks Airport"), was a key strategic location.

Our next landmark is Gýmeš Castle, a hilltop ruin with a history stretching back to the 13th century. The castle has endured sieges and changes in ownership over the centuries. Today, the ruins are a popular destination for those interested in exploring the region's turbulent past. The next Castle is dominating the town of Nitra. Nitra Castle was originally erected between the 9th and 11th centuries. It was destroyed during an attack by the Turkish Army in 1241. Most parts of the castle date back to the Renaissance and Gothic periods.

Nitra Castle

We then stop in Partizánske (LZPT), a relatively young town with a unique origin story. Its history is tied to the industrialist Jan Antonín Baťa, who established a shoe factory here in 1938. The town was built to house the factory workers and was originally named Baťovany. Its modern name, Partizánske, honors the local partisans who were active during World War II. We continue to Prievidza (LZPE), a major city with a rich history dating back to 1113. Its location in the Upper Nitra Basin has made it a site of human habitation since the Paleolithic period. The city's growth was fueled by its coal mines and a railway network, leading to a significant population increase in the 20th century.

A short distance from Prievidza is our next POI, Bojnice Castle, one of Slovakia's most famous and picturesque castles. Its history begins with a wooden fort in the 12th century, but it was the Pálffy family in the 17th century who rebuilt it into the magnificent Baroque and later Romantic structure we see today. The castle is a popular tourist attraction, known for its stunning architecture, a cave with a subterranean lake, and the "King Matthias Lime Tree," a legendary tree under which King Matthias Corvinus is said to have held feasts. Our flight path takes us to Martin (LZMA), an important cultural center in Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak National Museum, the Slovak National Library, and Matica Slovenská, a crucial cultural institution. Martin has played a pivotal role in the preservation and promotion of the Slovak language and national identity.

We then visit Strečno Castle, a stunning hilltop fortress overlooking the Váh River. The castle's history is intertwined with numerous noble families and military conflicts. It was partially demolished in the 17th century but has been extensively restored. The castle is also associated with the legend of Žofia Bosniaková, a charitable noblewoman whose body was discovered remarkably well-preserved in the castle chapel's crypt. We land at Zilnia (LZZI). Our next stop is Dubnica nad Váhom (LZDB), a town known for the Dubnica Mansion, a valuable cultural monument with a Renaissance core.

From there, we visit Trenčín Castle, one of the largest and most significant castles in Slovakia. Its origins date back to the 11th century, and it has long served as a guardian of important trade routes. The castle is famously linked to Matúš Čák, a powerful medieval Hungarian lord who, at one point, controlled nearly 50 castles and was known as the "Lord of the Váh and the Tatra Mountains." The castle complex, including the distinctive Matthew's Tower, is home to the Trenčín Museum, which offers exhibitions on regional history, archaeology, and art. We then fly to Čachtice Castle, a ruin shrouded in grim legend. The castle's history, dating to the 13th century, is overshadowed by its most notorious resident, Countess Elisabeth Báthory, who lived there in the early 17th century. She is infamous for her alleged torture and murder of hundreds of young women, a tale that has made her a figure of horror and inspired countless books and films.

We stop in Piešťany (LZPP), the largest and most important thermal spa in Slovakia. The town's reputation for healing springs dates back to the 19th century and has attracted visitors from all over the world. Its thermal waters and sulfuric mud are used to treat a variety of ailments, particularly those affecting the musculoskeletal system. Our next castle is Červený Kameň Castle, located in the Little Carpathians. Though originally a 13th-century royal castle, its modern appearance is a result of a 16th-century reconstruction by the wealthy Fugger family, who transformed it into a monumental fortress. From 1583, it was owned by the influential Pálffy family, who redeveloped it into a grand residence with rich interior decorations. Today, it serves as a museum, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the nobility.

We make a brief stop at Malacky (LZMC), a town that serves as a significant cultural center for the Záhorie region. It is known for its various cultural and sporting events held throughout the year.

Finally, we overfly the capital city of Bratislava, located on the banks of the Danube at the foot of the Little Carpathians. Bratislava is a unique European capital, bordering two other sovereign states, Austria and Hungary. It has a long and layered history, having been a Celtic oppidum, part of the Roman Empire, and a key center of the Great Moravian Empire. From the 16th to the 18th century, it served as the coronation site and capital of the Kingdom of Hungary. Today, it is Slovakia's political, cultural, and economic heart. The Bratislava Castle has been a Celtic settlement, a Roman outpost, a Great Moravian center, and a royal residence. After a devastating fire in 1811, it was meticulously restored in the 20th century. It now houses the Slovak National Museum's historical collections and serves as a representative space for the Slovak Parliament, offering breathtaking views of the city. We finish the flight at Bratislava's International Airport (LZIB).

The flight plans are here.

Aircraft

The flight is 320 miles long with 10 landings. We want to cruise at about 160 knots, so there is a great variety of suitable airplanes available. The shortest runway is about 2700 feet long. I will probably be in the BlackSquare Bonanza, please fly what you like.

Additional Scenery

Unfortunately, all airports for the Slovak Republic are payware.

The freeware addon Castles of Slovakia is required to see some of the castles. Some others are POI of MSFS 2020 and 2024.
