September 30, 2025Sep 30 We want to get a closer look at some of the German Mittelgebirge (Middle Mountain). A Mittelgebirge is a low mountain range that rises at least 200 to 1000 meters above its surroundings, with peaks usually between 500 and 1500 meters. Typical features are rounded forms, many valleys, rivers, and forests, but no pronounced glacial or alpine structures. The vegetation often differs slightly from the surrounding plain. These upland regions are traditionally sparsely populated, offer large natural spaces, and have a high recreational value. A significant part of tourism in Germany, especially hiking and active vacations, takes place here – they are versatile outdoor and holiday regions. We visited some of these Mittelgebirge on previous flights. For this flight, we will visit the Bavarian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains. Together with the adjoining Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic, the Bavarian Forest forms one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Europe. The highest mountain is the Großer Arber at 1456 meters. Acidic granites and gneiss dominate as bedrock, and the climate is harsh, with cold winters and warm summers. Typical landforms are low foothills, steep slopes, and deep valleys; rare animals such as lynx and European mink live here. We depart from Linz (LOWL) in Austria. We overfly the city and head north to Freistadt (LOLF), Austria, and reach the Austrian-Czech Border. The Bohemian Forest marks this border, and the German Czech border as well. This area also includes the Bavarian Forest. We follow the border, cross into Germany, and land at Sonnen (EDPS). After departure, we overfly the church of Wollaberg and then head north, cross into the Czech Republic, and land at Klatovy (LKKT). The airport in Klatovy is called "Home of the Skyvan" because it is a center for skydiving with the special aircraft type Short Skyvan, and these planes are especially frequently used there for jump events. Many skydivers from all over Europe come to Klatovy to jump from the characteristic rear ramp of the Skyvan, which is a unique experience in the sport. Thanks to its flexibility and long tradition as a skydiving aircraft, the Skyvan has earned a permanent place at Klatovy airport, making the motto "Home of the Skyvan" a recognized trademark and distinctive feature. We cross the border to Germany again and land at Arnbruck (EDNB). We fly north and then west across the Bavarian Forest, landing at Schmidgaden (EDPQ). Now we leave the Bavarian Forest and reach Weiden (EDQW). We are now in the Fichtelgebirge (Fichtel Mountains), another German Mittelgebirge. The Fichtel Mountains lie between the Franconian Forest, the Ore Mountains, and the Upper Palatine Forest. They are characterized by granite and gneiss formations, deep forests, and the twelve tallest peaks in Bavaria, ranging from 798 to 1053 meters. They border the Czech Republic and extend across both German and Czech territory. The Fichtel Mountains are known for hiking trails, winter sports, climbing parks, and scenic rocks and viewpoints. The region offers a nature park, rugged rock groups, and an especially cool climate zone in the summit area. We continue north and land at the glider field Tröstau (EDTT) before reaching today's destination Haidberg (EDNZ). The flight plans are here. The flight is 220 miles long with 7 landings. Any GA plane capable of operating from a 1500-foot runway is suitable. I will be in the A2A Comanche. Please fly what you like.
