November 3, 2025Nov 3 This flight leads us over the picturesque landscapes of the West Bohemian Spa Triangle, the Ore Mountains, Bohemian Switzerland, and the Saxon river valleys into central Germany. Be prepared for some gliderfield landings. Our flight begins in Karlovy Vary (LKKV), Czech Republic, one of the world’s most famous and historic spa towns, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Great Spas of Europe” since 2021. Karlovy Vary is renowned for its twelve hot mineral springs, which are set in magnificent colonnades, as well as for its stunning architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, including the iconic Grandhotel Pupp. Famous figures such as Goethe and Peter the Great once sought relaxation here. After takeoff, our route leads us over Lake Medard, a former open-pit mining lake that has developed into an important nature reserve and local recreation area. We continue to Auerbach (EDOA), Germany, in the Ore Mountains, a region deeply rooted in mining history. The Ore Mountains, which we cross next, are not only a scenic wonder with deep forests and gentle hills but also hold the distinction of being a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a mining region, reflecting over 800 years of mining and folk art history. We reach Ostrov (LKJY), Czech Republic, near Karlovy Vary, and then fly to Großrückerswalde (EDAG) on the German side before heading back to the Czech Republic to Chomutov (LKCH). From there, we head for an overflight of Teplice, one of the oldest spa resorts in Bohemia, whose origins date back to the 12th century. The next landing is Ústí nad Labem (LKUL), located at the confluence of the Bílina and Elbe rivers. From here, we enter Saxon Switzerland National Park, a unique landscape of bizarre sandstone rocks, table mountains, and deep gorges that invite climbing and hiking, offering breathtaking views such as those from the Bastei. Our next landing happens at Pirna (EDAR), the “Gateway to Saxon Switzerland,” whose picturesque old town with Renaissance merchant houses is well worth a visit. After taking off again, we follow the course of the Elbe and soon fly over the Saxon state capital, Dresden. The silhouette of Dresden, known as “Florence on the Elbe,” is shaped by the rebuilt Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, and the Semperoper, all impressive examples of Baroque and Classical architecture. We land at Dresden (EDDC). After departure, we overfly Moritzburg Palace, home of many rulers of Saxony. Now, we head to Meissen, the cradle of Saxony, famous for Albrechtsburg Castle, the oldest castle in Germany, and the world-famous Meissen porcelain. The flight continues over the Saxon castle country, where we fly over Kriebstein Castle, one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval castles in Saxony, picturesquely perched on a rock above the Zschopau river. Our final destination is Nobitz (EDAC) near Altenburg. The airport (Altenburg-Nobitz Aviation World) is one of the oldest continuously operating airfields in the world and today houses an aviation museum that impressively presents the history of flight. The flight plans are here. The flight is 216 miles long with 8 landings. I will be in the A2A Comanche. Please fly what you like.
