New South Wales Parcel Run

Featured Replies

We continue the tour around New South Wales, simulating the delivery of freight to the towns we visit.

We depart from Wellington (YWEL), a town situated at the confluence of the Macquarie and Bell rivers. This location served as an important base for explorer John Oxley's expeditions between 1817 and 1818, and he named the site after the Duke of Wellington. It was also established as a convict settlement between 1823 and 1831, a foundational piece of its early history, and it is near the famous Wellington limestone caves and the large Lake Burrendong. The first stop is Dubbo (YSDU), which acts as the key retail and service centre for a vast area of inland New South Wales. The climate here is semi-arid, with distinctly hotter summers and rare, yet reliable, rainfall, marking the transition into the Australian interior. Dubbo is most famous for being the home of the internationally acclaimed Taronga Western Plains Zoo, one of the world's great open-range zoos, featuring over 1,000 animals. It is a major road and rail freight hub, strategically located roughly halfway along the Newell Highway between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Our next stop is Narromine (YNRM). The airport is home to the Narromine Aviation Museum, which houses the world’s only flyable replica of the 1907 Wright Flyer Model A. During WWII, this field served as a major pilot training base (No. 5 EFTS), training nearly 3,000 pilots. Located on the Macquarie River, the town is also famous for being the birthplace of cricket legend Glenn McGrath. We continue to Warren (YWRN). Known as the "Bore Bath Capital," Warren is a gateway to the Macquarie Marshes, one of the largest inland semi-permanent wetlands in south-eastern Australia.

Continuing west, we reach Nyngan (YNYN), a town situated at the junction of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways. Nyngan is home to the "Big Bogan" statue, a humorous landmark celebrating the local shire's name (not in the simulator). It is a town built on copper mining and agriculture, and it gained national attention during the 1990 floods when the entire population had to be evacuated by helicopter.

Our final leg takes us into the red earth of the outback. Cobar is a rugged mining town that remains a vital economic center for New South Wales. We land at Cobar's regional airport (YCBA). The airport is a hive of activity for "Fly-In-Fly-Out" (FIFO) mining workers and serves as a critical link for NSW Health and emergency services. Cobar is famous for its "Great Cobar" open-cut mine.

The flight is 190 miles long with 4 landings. We want to cruise at about 170 knots. Any GA single-engine or light twin capable of that speed is suitable. I will be in the Asobo Cessna 408 in the FedEx livery. Please fly what you like.

The flight plans are here. The departure airport is not in the GTN database; the GTN flightplan departs from Mudgee (YMDG).

Recommended scenery:
