How NOT to bloat a C gau by changing BMPS?

I am replacing bitmaps in a gau file and even though I clear the original bmp it still adds to the total file size. Anyone know what I should do not to bloat the gau file size? Make sure that your replacement bitmap has the same colour depth as the original.Doug
