MAKE_STRING and non-proportional fonts

I've searched through several forums to see if I could find an answer to this, but I'm not having any luck. When I use the MAKE_STRING macro to dislay a string on a gauge, the resulting string's characters are equally spaced as if the font was one of the proportional fonts like Courier, however, the font is Arial, clearly a non-proportional font. I haven't had any luck using the fontsize parameter -- using it seems to make the string disappear completely, but I'm not sure if that's the right way to accomplish a prettier display of text. Is there some secret to the parameters to make text show up using the font's native character spacing instead of the ugly way text shows up by default?
