a low down dirty shame

I hope someday a law is passed outlawing unreversable default flattens.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/69319.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/69320.jpgThe SRTM data i have been playing with is just stunning and can be totally ruined with a few misplaced/non existent lakes.I use G2K4(great tool) to adjust the lions share of the shorelines, which i think really makes the mesh, but this problem really causes me to lose steam on areas i want enhanced.a few of my friends have asked for me to release some of what i have done, but I just dont feel like its 'done' until those uglies are fixed.is there any hope in sight?

Hi nanuk.1) You can locate and decompile the code of the default LWM polys ( HP bgls ) using LWMViewer, by Jim Keir:http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/index.html2) That code then can be converted to CFS2-style mesh-clinging water... removing the flattens entirely from the LOD5 sized area, using Edgar Knobloch's LWMConverter, and recompiling/replacing the default:http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...Scen&DLID=43104( Give the recompiled defaults a slightly different name, and rename the originals as HPxxxxxx.org, to deactivate them as needed. )3) Now, Ground2K can be used to add the correct shapes and elevations for the water without worrying about the flattens. 1, 2, 3.Dick

:-)You have made me one happy camper! It was a little tricky the first try, but now is so simple.thank you so much for the help. Why do you think MS changed this? do you see any benefit from their standpoint, or is this a cut corner?outstanding! Im so happy to have a solution to this problem.there goes my free time. ;-)thanks

Hi nanuk:I spot someone working in the Ketchikan area - very nice! Are you using my satellite background bitmaps?Sorry, but I can't refrain from two comments! You mention SRTM: if you're doing add-on mesh for that area, may I suggest using NED 60-m data instead? See this thread: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho..._id=1485&page=2If your area extends into B.C., you could also use the outstanding 23-m CDED1 data available at http://www.geobase.ca/Alternatively, you could use the new Taburet AK 38-m freeware mesh as a base (made from NED data) and thus not worry about creating your own mesh (actually, I'm not sure whether it extends into the Panhandle). The other comment is that Dick's suggestion is good but he forgot to point out a "tiny" problem: now your entire LOD5 section has no more flat water. With an SRTM mesh, even the ocean will be bumpy and all the lakes too. Only those few water bodies you'll be able to fix in G2K4 will end up being nice and flat but the hundreds in the remaining LOD8 sections will be bumpy, with water "climbing" up and down the surrounding slopes. Given that SE Alaska is a major destination for floatplane bush flying I'd take that unintended consequence into consideration. Ideally, you should only set to -9999 those areas you're replacing but I don't know whether Edgar's tools allows to do that. My approach is to completely remove the LOD sections I'm replacing from the HP and HL files while leaving the rest of the LOD5 section alone (e.g., Jim and I did this in our Glacier Bay N.P. project). In this case the problem starts if someone else does the same with another area of the same LOD5 but I believe those cases can be dealt with by communication between the designers.Cheers, Holger
