Textures in Gmax, proportions

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone,I've just started playing around with Gmax and have spent the last few days learning the program and creating my first airport. After doing up the Control tower complex and the Domestic terminal I decided before I went any further I should started getting some experience in applying textures.I have run through the FS Gmax tutorial and found it helpful however I have hit a snag in applying my texture correctly to a none rectangular surface.Specifically, I am trying to apply a created texture onto a surface of a cone control tower. I decided to make a dummy texture to practice with, this very simple texture is detailed below.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133327.jpgWhen I apply the texture to the face and then unwrap it, the texture I get it distorted. The problem however is not that it is distorted, but that the original image which was symetric becomes nonsymetric, as you can see it has kind of shifted to the right.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133328.jpgThe surface the image is applied to is a polygon with a wider top than bottom as it is a surface on a cone. I image this is what's causing the problem but I'm unsure how I fix it. When I create a larger image it simple just pushes everything futher right (until the second black box basically is off the screen)What I am doing is:a) Selecting a face:( Applying UVW Wrap with 'Face' selectedc) Unwrapping the UVWd) Going to Edit and selecting the above area in my 256x256 bitmap, the selection on the bitmap is a rectangleI'm unsure what exactly I'm doing wrong, as I thought the vertices on the UVW mapping bitmap would correspond with the four vertices on the face of the object itself, so even though the shape is incorrect it would be stretched and distorted so that the face on object was 'filled' with the selected map.I'd appreciate some help if anyone has the time, sorry for the length of the post but I thought the mroe information I give you the easier it would be for someone to help meRegardsJeremy Lio

Hello Jeremy,Congratulations on your foray into gMax design. It is a very easy program to use, but with so many features that it can appear complex at first sight.Interesting problem, so I took your texture and made it part of a 256 x 256 pixel image. Here is the primitive in gMax:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133388.jpgPlease notice that I checked the Generate Mapping Coordinates box before creating.I then created the Material and applied it to the object directly:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133389.jpgNot very pretty.A UVW Unwrap Modifier is added and I select the Face, any Face:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133390.jpgI call up the Edit UVW window and get the texture with UVWs:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133391.jpgAfter moving the UVWs (with Scale Horizontal and Move Horizontal), this is what I get:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133392.jpgIs that what you are trying to do? I have no idea why you get that distorted texture, very strange.Best regards.Luis

Thanks Luis,I have been doing what you've been doing there in that example.Unfortunately that texture distortion is specifically the problem. Thats what I'm trying to discover how to eliminate.I really just want the texture centred on the face of the object, not skewed to one side.

Okay, second problem with textures. Sorry if this seems simple. When my textures appear in Flight simulator they tend to have some type of 'antialias' property added to them. I would have said it was the lighting but then it is actually in the middle of some bitmaps. For example looking at the areas around the below windows (especially the right) in the graphics program there's no white, however in FF there is a faint white border. In graphics programhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133426.jpgIn flight simualtorhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/133427.jpgIs there anyway to remove this?RegardsJeremy

It occurred to me that I once had some small problems with display in gMax. It all had to do with the video driver selection. When one first installs the program, one must select between the software HEIDI acceleration, OpenGL, or DirectX, the last two being dependant on the graphics card.I have an Athlon and a GeForce, yet both the OpenGL and DirectX gave me problems, which is puzzling. I now use the HEIDI software driver with better results, as far as I can tell. This is just a guess, Jeremy, and probably wrong, but perhaps you could try changing the driver and see what happens. It is in Preferences, on the Viewports tab, then down at the bottom. There is documentation for this in the Help file.Best regards.Luis
