Waterclass - Lakes and Blue vs. Green

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I have an FSX gripe I'd like to fix for myself (and anyone else interested)FSX has defined Lake Champlain (along the northern VT/NY border) as a "inland brown" lake. Unfortunately, this is grossly inaccurate, and I'd like to tweak the waterclass definitions used to create the lake. As one who has flown over it and has vacationed along it's shores for each and every of my 31 years, I can tell you it is a gloriously blue gem of a lake. What tools then can I use to adjust the water class definitions for the lake? Thanks muchly!-Greg

Hi Greg, assuming you have the Deluxe version of FSX you should read the "Water Classification" section of the Terrain and Scenery SDK. That will give you an idea of how FS defines water classes, i.e., colors.Once you've decided on an appropriate class for Lake Champlain you can use the SBuilderX - http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fsxsd&DLID=106143 - background image function to load a Google Earth (or other tile server) satellite image of the lake area and then use SBuilder's water class tool to place that class. Compile and you're done.Cheers, Holger

I've worked with some landclass reassignment back in the "early" days of FSX (for a New England project I have yet to release), and I only assumed waterclass was similar. I was using an Excel-based tool, which while functional, wasn't ideally suited for the task. I'll take a close look at SBuilderX and it's ability to suck in aerial images for easier class assignment.Once done, what the heck - might as well upload it!Thanks,-Greg
