Couple of questions from a newbie

Recommended Posts

Guest PhilC

I'm new at adding AI traffic and have a couple of questions:1) What all exactly is required to add AI to a non-towered airport? I have been working on KGLS. I added a tower, parking spaces, frequencies and a flightplan but the traffic never shows up, on the ground or in the air. The airport does have ILS available. Are there some caveats that I may be missing? i.e. tower and ground must be different frequencies or something like that.Any help or pointing me in the right direction is appreciated.2) Are there only certain planes that can be used for AI? Any recommendations where I could find some new ones or repaints? I would like to add Southwest since that in one of the main ones in my area.I know that you all have probably answered these questions a hundred times but I'm having trouble searching tonight for some reason. Thanks all.

1)You need tower, a tower frequency, parking, runway - and taxiways connecting the taxiways and runways correctly.I made a few airports work like that.2)As mentioned: www.projectai.com./Lars

Some really basic newbie mistakes (I know because I've made 'em all myself at one time or another...)The airport needs to be in the airports.txt file generated by TTools TDecompiler. It's a flat text file, so just look at it and it will be obvious how things go. Don't worry about alphabetical order - TTools will take care of that. The planes you can use are in the aircraft.txt file. For details, check the TTools documentation. (This is one of the best documentation files I've ever seen, by the way.) You can add planes. Note that your favorite Southwest is NOT include in the default Voicepack as an airline, only a direction. You can modify the Voicepack, so browse around these fora (proper Latin plural of forum) for more info. After you add your flight plans to flightplans.txt, you need to run TCompiler to put it back into the system. FS 2002 does NOT read the 3 text files, but rather the Traffic.bgl file which is the input to TDecompiler (to extract the text files) and the output of TCompiler (to regenerate the binary file FS2002 reads.)WARNING: Adding aircraft and flight plans can be addictive. You may find yourself completely forgetting to fly. I've got hundreds of planes, and I use them all, all over the world. I probably spend 3 hours with TTools and AFCAD for every hour I spend in FS2002. Don't try this at home unless you have a nagging wife who will drag you away from your computer, at least on work nights...

Thanks all!I have done everything as you all have suggested and AI craft still do not show up as this airport. There must be something I have done wrong somewhere. I verified that the airport, aircraft and flightplans exist, have compiled and have checked the airport thoroughly with AFCAD. Maybe I'm just not there at the correct times although I have tried almost everytime day and night.I'll keep trying.I do appreciate your help.

Remember that the times in the flight plans are GMT, so use that time in the FS dialog box, not your local time.Hope this helps,-- Tom GibsonCalifornia Classic Propliners: http://www.calclassic.com/Cal Classic Alco Page: http://www.calclassic.com/alco/Freeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.com/ San Diego Model RR Museum: http://www.sdmodelrailroadm.com/Drop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Thanks Tom. I use yRoute which allows you to select a time offset. I assumed that if I picked mine (-6 GMT) I would then enter my local time and it yRoute would adjust the time to the correct GMT. Is this not correct?

It's usually correct, but not always. Be sure to check the GMT vs local time offset in the World/Time & Season menu when at the airport to confirm this.Hope this helps,-- Tom GibsonCalifornia Classic Propliners: http://www.calclassic.com/Cal Classic Alco Page: http://www.calclassic.com/alco/Freeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.com/ San Diego Model RR Museum: http://www.sdmodelrailroadm.com/Drop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Hi Phil,I put your 3 flight plans in and they all worked fine for takeoff. When you start FS, go to create a flight and change time. You will notice MS shows a 5 hour time difference; not 6.Also, just to be sure, open the airport with AFCAD and change 2 or 3 parking spots from whatever size they are, to small gates. This will ensure their big enough to handle your planes.Start FS, set the time to 17:57 GMT. 12:57 local time. You should see all 3 of your planes sitting there. The Lear will start at 18:00 GMT.My airport co-ordinates are a little different from yours but it shouldn't make a difference. Mine are: KGLS,N29* 14.99',W94* 51.56',6Try this and let me know how you make out.PeteCYYF

Did everything as you instructed and I'm still all alone at the airport. Thus is frustrating because a generally have no problems understanding these types of things. It must be something I have done to my AFCAD file.In a last resort, I am posting my AFCAD file below. Everyone, please excuse this. I am determined to figure this out.Pete, if you see anything glaring please let me know. Problem found and solved. This line in Lee Swordy's documentation was the answer."I changed flight plans or aircraft and nothing changed in the AI world.Did you make a copy of the traffic.bgl file before making changes, and did you leave the copy in the same folder? FS2002 will often read the copied file, even if it has a different name, and will ignore the modified traffic.bgl file. This means that FS2002 will be running with all the stock AI traffic. If you make a copy of that file then change the file extension from ".bgl" to something else, such as ".xyz" so FS2002 won't try to read it."Phil changed the file extension name on the copy and now has his traffic working.PeteCYYF
