"Winds and Temperatures Aloft Forecasts (FDs) question.

Featured Replies

Anyone know what "FD" stands for? Thanks,Chris

It's just a code to indicate the specific product (winds aloft forecast in this case). Some others that I can recall are:sigmets - WSconvective sigmets - WSTairmets - WApireps - UAarea forecast - FAterminal forecast - TAFand many othersLike I mentioned in an earlier reply, all these abbreviations and contractions are a throwback to the days when this stuff was transmitted and printed using mechanical teletypes. The "baud rate" was about the same as my typing speed.Dan

Good to hear from ya! I'm occasionally on ICQ again, also... so look me up, eh?Cheers!Ken WoodMeteorologistCNN International Weather :-sun1
