Bridge Models for you!

Recommended Posts

I am finishing up a couple of bridge models for you designers out there. All the time I have been making scenery, I have missed bridge models. My country is full of elegant bridges, and the two very typical ones here are modeled after Ask

G'day Andrew,Very nice bridge models! > All the time I have been making >scenery, I have missed bridge models. My country is full of >elegant bridges, I feel the same way about my very small bit of scenery. I think modelling bridges really adds a lot to scenery design.Cheers,Roger @YSSY

Hi Roger,I think they are very important, because you often find them near the airports, and they really stand out in the landscape. Glad I am finally able to make them!

AndrewBeautiful models :)How difficult would it be to stretch them, say to fit across the River Humber?Colin

Hi Colin although I did not make 'em at least with max it's easy just scale along the x or y axis. Oh and very nice models BTW!Dan.

Hi Colin and Dan,I was in Humberside 2 years ago. Isn`t that bridge a little bit like mine? Stretching them are easy, both in Max and the Fly2 Editor. I`ll put instructions in the readme. In the Fly2 Editor you can zoom the models, also in only one axis. Just keep an eye on the textures! Today I am going to correct the cables on bridge no.2, and upload the bridges this week.Dan, do you know how to make and export a simple light from Max? Would be nice with those two red lights on the towers if the process is not too difficult...

Hi Andrew,Yes, very very similar, that's why I asked :)That's when I get chance to do that tile, of course!Colin

Colin,Hope the Humber is there by default, so you can use it now. I also have some delayed Tiles because of the problems with elevation data, so I am making some models meanwhile. If you want some text on the Humberside bridge, I can make it!The pic shows both bridges at SFO, just to show their size. The towers on the nearest one is already rebuilt. There may be some flight delays at SFO right now :-D

If so, simple, generic, flat double and multiple lane bridges of various lengths would be nice. Ones that sit very low to the ground and with low framerate impact. The Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver, Canada would be nice. Something that does not impact framerates too much. A picture and brief details can be viewed at the following link. http://www.b-t.com/projects/liongate.htmVANCOUVER SCENERYI have been working on Vancouver Scenery for the last month. TerraScene is currently processing my latest hand edited Day, Night and Watermask images based on Candian CLI LandUse data. Hopefully they will be ready for slicing and pod generation overnight. My Pentium II 400Mhz is complaning about the workload. For those who are curious, I have the following done or in the works:Improved TRI coastline for CYVR, Sea Island. No more sinking off taxiway A or south aprons. Thank you Colin.Repositioned Runways at CYVR, including Rwy 26A that was too far south along with the most detailed taxiways for Vancouver yet. Runways and taxiways now match the CAP Airport diagram almost perfectly.Terramodels Airport buildings and taxiway signs.Repositioned buildings downtown and at CYVR - TRI left them lying all over the place.Andrew Farnaby's Terminal Building from Fly! 1.0 - You there Andrew Farnaby? Contact me if you are... westhouse@lycos.comAccurate Sea Island, Fraser River, Burrard Inlet, Port Moody, Stanley Park, Lost Lagoon, Deadman's Island, False Creek, and downtown coastline around Canada Place.Optional GTOPO elevations for southern BC.I might include Vancouver Heliports, Delta Heritage Airpark CAK3 and Squamish CYSE aiport. Perhaps even a few ships in the area. So far, things are looking real good. Framerates are flyable on my stoneage computer although nightlites really tax the system. Pretty good considering my system is below the Fly! 2 recommended system. I hope to post some images in the next few weeks. Just wish I had a system that could really make them shine.Well, back to work...http://members.shaw.ca/fly2/images/snoopyace.gifRob Westhouse, VE5VKSaskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada"Land of Living Skies"

This is so cool, and its just what we need, more custom models in FlyII.When I get my hands on these babies Im going to hover for a while around them to take in their beauty.Call me sad, but I will hover and admire :-lol All The BestSteve[/div] http://mysite.freeserve.com/fly2theuk/aragon.jpg][/divSceneryhttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2tms&Go=SearchRepaintshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2Air&Go=SearchOther fileshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...2Misc&Go=Search

Steve,I have a passion for bridges. When I see them in real-life, I often stop my car if I can, then I roll myself a cigarette and like you, hover around them :)

Hi Rob,That`s exactly what I`m trying to do. I am omitting a lot of details in order to get fps friendly models, thinking it`s a Flight Sim and not a Building Sim. Still it is possible to get a nice result :)I was in Halifax 1 year ago, a pity I had not time to admire the bridges there!A few days ago I tried to model a bridge quite like the Lions Gate Bridge. I managed to model all the steel framework, but I quickly came to the conclusion that it would end up with too many vertices and faces. The solution is to make the steel framework as a texture. So what I need now is some pictures of bridges taken from the side, so I can make a texure I can use for several bridges.Rob, if I can get the all-important pictures, I may make this one for you. People have asked me about models before, but without good pics I am often lost. I could make the textures myself, but I just don`t have time.Btw when is your scenery out? Sounds very promising!Btw(2): Interesting you use GTOPO data. I`ve been experimenting with this and DTED-0 for a while. The conclusion is this: DTED-0 does not fix anything where I live compared with GTOPO30, so I am sticking to those data. GTOPO30 are even better-looking, I guess it is more interpolated than DTED-0. Trying to grab SRTM DTED-1 right now.(Yes, I am going to PAY for it) !!

Here are some, but poor views of Runcorn/Widnes Bridge along with the railway bridge. These you see well on your final into Liverpool Airport. If you ever make anything similar I will add it to my Scenery.(Hint) :-roll All The BestSteve[/div] http://mysite.freeserve.com/fly2theuk/aragon.jpg][/divSceneryhttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2tms&Go=SearchRepaintshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2Air&Go=SearchOther fileshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...2Misc&Go=Search

I'll see what pictures and info I can dig up.I probably have a few weeks left getting the scenery together, perhaps longer. Depends on how much time I can spend on it.GTOPO30/Dted data...Ashley Reaux(sp?) did a good comparison of the two DEM formats way back in the Fly! 1.0 days. You can read and see the results at the following address:http://www.asrux.com/fly/demcomparision.htmlIn a nutshell, Dted gets the mountain peaks accurate, but Valleys are not accurate. GTOPO30 is the reverse. Mountain peaks not as high as they should be, but valleys more accurate.I go for the more accurate valleys as this is where VFR flight will be and any lakes/rivers.http://members.shaw.ca/fly2/images/snoopyace.gifRob Westhouse, VE5VKSaskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada"Land of Living Skies"

Wow.What a nice construction. I have been driving over and sailing under the Firt of Forth bridge in Edinburgh, thats a great one. From the rivets alone, you can build a 10.000 ton ship. You have some nice steel bridges in England! But I tell you for shure, that road bridge will never be friendly on your frame-rate, you can`t cheat the steelwork on that one with a texture!(But I guess you won`t fly around it all day either)! Thanks for the pictures, they give me new ideas :)

I read that one at least a year ago. Interesting stuff.I also studied the white papers on both GTOPO30 and DTED-0, and I went for the valleys too, after a lot of trials with the slicer. I am also happy with the mountains. In Bergen, compared with the default data, GTOPO30 is to be or not to be for that scenery. Both data sets are no good for the fjords at all, that`s the bad news. Very bad!Looking forward to the pics. Regarding this type of bridge, remember I haven`t made my first one yet. But when it`s up, I would like to try your bridge :) As always, time decides what can be done.

Hi Andrew I can show you how to model with "lattace" objects if needed. One can make fairly low polly bridges using lattace objects once you learn how to use the tool So if intrested email me and I will try to set somthing up on yahoo so we can talk "live" if neededThe atatched pic shows a "lattace" object (it's the bridge LOL).
