A new small region for FU3 - Channel Islands

Recommended Posts

This new region will be uploaded soon as install kit. The full region folder including 3 flattened airports with a bit traffic , the elevation meshes and a working navigation map is included. For copyright reason there are no maps in the maps folder. You will have to get it yourself using a full script that will build the final FU3 tiles using new command line tools for picture patching, resizing, cutting, palettizing and compiling, all this in one batch job. To download the map fragments you will have to use maps2bgl available at avsimSearch for maps2bgl in the avsim library to find the entries to the map tool of Gunnar Daehling and the English description by Jeremy Fletcher.3 included KLM files will cover the area needed. The region is just 8x8 tiles, 9 of it with texture after the final process. The kit will demonstrate how you can do a minimal working region.you can fly in the Channel region just after the kit installation - but then you will see just water :-).after the map download by maps2bgl and the batch script you will have the full region configured. The download will store about 3500 maps of 256x256 with a total size of 650MB so ADSL is a must. The script will convert to tga, working folder size is about 1.5GB. The Channel region cannot run in FU3 together with the Seattle region. Make a copy of your full FU3 game in a new path, then remove Seattle and insert Channel region. Another way is to move the Seattle region outside the FU3 game during Channel flights. Owners of the UK region can place the Channel region in the same fu3 game without conflicts.Depending of the computer power you will need about 1 hour to download the maps and run the scripts. At the end you will have to move all L*.bin files to the maps folder of the Channel region. This way make it possible to distribute new region or even the other special region like UK or Switzerland. This kit is a first try if it will be feasible for standard users. After the first installation you can repaint and modify the 9 tiles retained as L0xxyy.tga and compile again with GebBinTile to make a smoother adaptation to the water tile or modify airport texture - Guernsey has clouds on the runway :-)http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/channelmap.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/alderney1.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/guernsey1.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/guernsey2.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/guernsey3.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/guernsey4.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/jersey3.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/jersey1.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/forum/jersey2.jpghave fun with FU3:-wave Andre

Hi Andre and team...Looks good, nice to have somewhere new to fly.I had 90% completed a similar project using Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands off the east coast of OZ. It was a nice little region with only two strips, and only 20 miles apart after a rather convenient tectonic shift brought them much closer together than they really are. :-lol Might finish it off one day...."The Channel region cannot run in FU3 together with the Seattle region. Make a copy of your full FU3 game in a new path, then remove Seattle and insert Channel region. Another way is to move the Seattle region outside the FU3 game during Channel flights. Owners of the UK region can place the Channel region in the same fu3 game without conflicts."Andre, I'm wondering why this is? Can't the mini region sit alongside Seattle and Sanfran? I'm sure you're right, but I have never observed problems from adding extra regions into the /regions/ folder. It seems to work fine. Maybe outer terrain is the issue?Cheers:-wave Bruce H

Hi Bruce,Your regions are at the other side of the world :-)No latitude conflict with Seattle. But Channel is about at the same latitude so fu3 will load Seattle at the start and when you select the start point at the bottom of the map, then Channel region is loaded - but after 1 second the switch region message is displayed and will never end.It must be a special situation for Seattle then when I use UKS and Channel in the same game I don't have conflict and I can't fly from Jersey to IOW :-(:-waveAndre
