Straight In Approach question

Featured Replies

Hi Everone, I wonder how you set up RC so that you will be given a Straight-In approach without any Approach Control vectoring? Thus far I haven't been able to receive a Straight-In approach from Approach Control. I must be doing something wrong. Thanks

Hi Blais,The RC controllers are a very conscientious bunch :-)They are never content with something as vague as a 'straight in approach' but will always try to give you the relevant vectors to get you lined up before clearing you for the approach - unless, of course, you tell them you can do it by yourself (lots more options to do this in RC3 - you can request vor, ndb, gps, ils etc approaches). All the best,John

Thanks John, The reason I even posed the question is that I thought I read somewhere that you could do a straight-in approach with V2.2 but I don't remember where I read it. I guess I could opt to file an arrival NOTAM and allow Approach Control to take a REST. Gotta try this from the MADWIN THREE STAR (SUNOL) at KOAK to KOAK R29. AC Vectoring, in this case, is a disaster. Thanks

Hi Blais,Yep, definitely have notams enabled when approaching through mountainous terrain. The controllers do their best but they don't know where the hills are :-eekAll the best,John

rc v2.2 (and v3) will give you straight in vectors, if you are arriving at +/- 5 degrees of the desired runway heading, there aren't any vectors. takes some planning to set up the next to the last checkpoint, 41 miles out, and a reciprocal heading of the runway.

Dag-gon it! I KNEW I'd forgotten something! John, we should've put "Straight-In" as menu item #2 on the IAP menu :-eek Guys, use the IAP option(s). You can shoot a straight-in, a full, a loop-d-loop, whatever you want. The phrase "straight-in" won't be heard though.Really, it means more to a controller (or is at least equally as important), as a pilot. If I clr someone "for apch", they're authorized to do the PT. If I clr someone for a "straight-in", they're not! Doing so could (and has many times) compromised seperation, which equates to Bill Stevens.D! I wisht I'd remembered that!! Aw well... Vx. BUT BEWARE }> , I'll find more and more ways to keep you guys honest as the Vs go on ;-). ya'all enjoy!!

Thanks Doug and JD, Heck guys, we can't expect everything at once. We'll remember what JD said in terms of angular restriction plus Doug's gentle reminder. Someday I'll stop bugging you folks. I really do mean to be positive about any comments and let you folks, who actually will, decide what the next steps will be.A nice upcoming week to the crew.Cheers

Doug,There is a sort-of "Straight-in approach" --> Request Visual.Actually, v3 does a fine job of seeing if I'm lined up well or not and will just turn me loose if all looks to be within 10-15 degrees. It otherwise turns me a bit and I'm still about straight-in. Only on occasion has the APC dude flipped out and sent me over and around. Then *I* ask for Mr. Bill. :-lol

Gee Scott, I think you just hit the nail on the head. Never thought of "Requesting a Visual". It really isn't important that I do or do not see the runway or anything else for that matter. I am relying solely on instrumentation anyway. Good thinking Scott. Yet, we must admit, it spoils the illusion of ATC guidance for safety purposes. But it is a simple way out of the bag without hitting the granite.Regards
