I have been having real problems with FS2002 being very unstable with 2.97. I sent an e-mail to Pete Dowson about this, and noted that a new version, 2.971 has been posted. Perhaps others were having problems or Pete noted some bad stuff in 2.97.

Thanks for that information. I had not read the file yet.FSUIPC 2.971 also causes problems on my system. (1) FSNavigator does not display properly, and often can be seen "through" the cockpit view of the PSS A320. (2) The ATC screen font letters appear to be in individual boxes surrounded by faint white lines. (3) I get multiple screens showing on FS2002 when I switch views -- sometimes they go away, sometimes they don't. FSUIPC versions 2.97 or higher have caused me problems with dysfunction of Radar Contact, at least that's what I think is happening. Still checking it out.
