Holding Pattern...Need Refresher...

Featured Replies

I haven't been issued a hold the last couple of flights with holding option set at 100%. I seem to remember that you have to have a VOR within 5 miles of your arrival airport. Does it have to be the last waypoint? I've set up STAR approaches and included the VOR as my last waypoint (right AT the airport) so it will be part of my flightplan although I don't actually ever fly to it.When I used to get the holds, I was usually straight on to the VOR and was issued the hold 40 +/- miles out. Now with the STARs, I'm not straight on to the VOR. Could this be the problem? Can someone help my poor addlepated mind recall how to set this up properly? *:-*Thanks, Adam

the last checkpoint in the flight plan must be a vor, it must be less than 5 miles from the airport, arrival notams must be off, it can't be a tower enroute scenario, there must be an approach controller, no change of destinationi think that about covers it. now what causes no holding in your flight?

Notams were on. Not sure what a tower enroute scenario is.Is it possible to have a STAR and then paste the VOR onto the end of the route so you could have a hold, then request an IAP? Probably not, I'm guessing as you might not be flying towards the VOR and hence wouldn't be lined up for a hold. Is my logic faulty?I'll do my next flight without notams at the arrival airport.Awesome service John! Thanks, Adam

tower enroute means a short flight, usually 80 miles or less, no center involved. a characteristic of tower enroute is switching from departure to approach.yes you can have a star, with the last checkpoint being a vor. it is the distance from the airport to the last checkpoint/vor that is the measure i'm looking at.yes you can have a hold, at the end of the hold contact approach, and then ask for an iap approach (and fly the rest of your star)

Superlative program and support.Thanks jd.Adam

Completed a wonderful flight from CYHZ to CYYZ. I was given a hold and then proceeded on with my STAR into Toronto. I just didn't enter the STAR into MSFS flight planner but did in DF734 FMC. Worked like a charm. Thanks RC people!Adam
