AI traffic confusion

Featured Replies

Hi,I know, it's not really a new topic, but I need some clarification. In various threads I read about the fact, that RC cannot control the FS2K2 AI traffic but it can recognize it. In the RC3 manual you can read, that you can use FS2K2 AI traffic and RC3 together (but intependent). But -- it happens regularly that when I'm on short final an AI aircraft take off from the oposite runway I'm cleared for and heads directly towards my aircraft.Neither FS2K2 ATC nor RC3 recognizes this situation, I get no warning from RC3. If the facts I mentioned above are true, such a situation should never occour in my opinion. Or am I wrong?Tom.

you can monitor the fs atc, listen for the active runway, and ask rc approach for that runway. that is the only work around i know of. in 3.1 rc will see those planes on the other end of the runway, and give you a go-around until they are all gone, or you choose a different runway.it would be nice if i could tell the ai planes what runways to use, but i can't. :-(jd

jd,Hmm. You've thought about this for quite a while, but I can't remember where you are on this issue. Can you (that is, RC v3.x) know which runway FS (2002 or ACOF) is using? If so, then you could use that runway for Radar Contact's ATC well.I realize that just following the MS lead may not be optimal. (Gosh, in FS2002 it surely is not!) For those who don't care about AI traffic, this is no problem--they simply turn off AI. AI, however, truly enhances the airport experience and many find it an indispensable feature. For those who care about AI, I wonder if you might consider developing special feature: as an option (in the setup menu), let the user to instruct RC to follow the FS lead in runway selection. Those choosing this option would have the advantage of being in the same pattern as the AI. (Of course, not all would be perfect. The dumb AI might just choose to taxi out onto the runway at any time! And the AI would be following the IQ-challenged controllers in the FS tower.) In effect, as you point out, we can do a workaround by monitoring FS ATC and requesting the FS runway. However, it would help immersion if RC would do that work for us

i don't know which runway fs is using. if you know how i can tell, please share.but isn't it easier than that? list to fs atc, find out what runway they are using, and request that runway when you talk to ground?same with arrival. list to arrival, ask arrival for the same runway.jd

Hi JD<>I have just a simple and very short question!!When will it be released???;) Bruno

>i don't know which runway fs is using. if you know how i can >tell, please share. Wish I could help. Sorry for my ignorance. I wonder if Peter D. knows this....>but isn't it easier than that?Yes, to be sure. And am currently combining FS and RC by listening twice. But it all adds to a second layer of ATC -- having to bridge between FS ATC and RC ATC and consciously remember which is "real". A seamless implementation would obviously be preferable. But of course, that may be pie-in-the-sky.Thanks for your reply.Mike MacKuen

Hello,In fact there is a way to work around this problem. You have to download the program called "AFCAD".Within this program there is a option to assign runway'sfor take-off only, depart only or even close runways, so they won't be assigned to AI traffic. Here is a small example, of a flight a few days ago fromParis Orly (LFPO) to Metz (LFJL):First download the latest weather and check wind directionfor the departure and arrival airport (in this case the windwas coming from around 240 with approx. 12 kts).Secondly start AFCAD and search for LFPO, i made rwy 25for departure only and rwy 26 for landing only, all otherrunway's closed for both landing and departure. For Metz I assigned rwy 22 for landing and departure and 04 closed forlanding and departure.Start FS2002 and RC3, within the ATC option screen, you canclick on rwy 25 for departure and 22 for landing. Now AI traffic at Paris Orly will take-off from rwy 25 and landat 26, so no worries that a aircraft will land on top of youwhen lined up for departure or lines up when you are on short final.Regards,Niek

Hi NiekGreat idea! I think this is the easiest workaround existing by now!You are apparently familiar with AFCAD. My I direct this query to you:I lately tried to adjust my AI-Traffic in some European addon airports. I am also using Lee Swordy's AFCAD to do that. I did modify all parking gates correct as well as the runways. However, I couldn't see any of these adjustments after saving and restarting FS2k2. Even I import provided AFCAD-Files it doesn't have an impact after I restart FS2k2. I have no clue why it doesn't work anymore. It used to some months ago. Would you know why? Thanks a lot!Sam

Hello,Download Afcad 1.40 (search for afcad140.zip at avsim or flightsim.com). With this program you can load the facilitydata for airports within FS2002. Within this program there is a option to assign runway's for take-off only, land only or even close runway's. This works fine for me.Few day's ago did a flight from Paris Orly to Metz, assignedrwy 25 for departure only and rwy 26 for landing only, all other runway's closed. Now FS2002 AI traffic will land at rwy 26 and depart from rwy 25. With Afcad you can manipulate AI traffic, and avoid any surprises.Regards,Niek

Hi Sam,For these addons you have to look for AFCAD files, otherwiseyou might see aircraft landing next to the runway or taxing through the grass.Place the *.txt file in the Afcad folder. Start Afcad and click on file, import airport, find the name for the downloaded airport, click OK.You will now see the graphical lay-out of the airport. Press the save button and FS2002 will be now updated with the new data.To remove a imported or changed airport, click file, Catalog/Delete/Restore airports. This will give you a catalog off all modified airports. Here you can restore the original airport data if needed.Note that Afcad will only change the facility data for the airport to be used by AI planes i.e. the position of runway's, taxiway's, gates etc. Afcad won't change anything visible. So if you change the position of a runway, you won't see this in the scenery. Hope that this helps,Regards,Niek
