May 10, 200323 yr Trying to get RC3.01 running for the first time and I can't seem to get any atc voices. The advdisp window works, I select the freq on comm1 and choose 1 to get weather or 2 for ground. advdisp show standby, but nothing out of the speakers. Have tried comm1 and comm2. I do hear voices when I select the FS ATC and tune to weather or ground. What silly thing have I missed? Thanks for your help.
May 13, 200323 yr That's the problem then. You need a multi-channel card like the SB Live! or Audigy.
May 14, 200323 yr I don't know whether a new card would fix it or not, but I do know that if I press 2 at the first ADVDisp menu for clearance delivery wait a second and press the ALT key, to make the file menu appear, I can hear the pilot request CD and then CD giving the clearance. The voices can be heard until I press ALT again. I can then request taxi from ground in the same way and tower instructions also. Of course, each time I press ALT the sim pauses. not ideal. That doesn't really strike me as a sound card problem, but I've been doing this long enough to know to never say never and I guess if it's all I've got to go on..... Thanks Lynn
May 14, 200323 yr Lynn,Yes, a new card will fix it. The SB PCI128 is a single-channel sound card. You need a multi-channel card because you are trying to get sound from two different programs. When you press ALT, it pauses FS and releases the sound resources, which RC then uses. If you press "p" for pause, or minimize FS the same thing happens. We've been through this many, many times with other users, so it's pretty well known. I even went so far as to write Creative and ask if there is a way to make the old PCI128 card work as a multi-channel card. The answer is "no".I just answered an e-mail regarding this question yesterday, so it's a common problem.Since this issue/question has been asked so many times, I would think it would be the first question/answer in the FAQ. I haven't read the FAQ in a while, so don't know if it's in there or noT.Any SB or other multi-channel sound card will work. The best all-purpose all-game card is a SoundBlaster. Either Live! 5.1, Live! Value, or Audigy, depending on your budget and needs.
May 14, 200323 yr Disabled the Motherboard sound and Installed a SBlive and, as you said, it worked! Thanks so much for taking time to help. Hope to be able to return the favor some day. It's a shame it's not in the FAQ (I looked, again) or in the manual. I had also looked through the first few pages of this forum. Sorry, I didin't have enough patience to look at them all. Would've saved me a bunch. Maybe some of the other new folks will see this thread and it will help them. Thanks againLynn
