September 25, 200421 yr Hello,my english is not very good and I'm often not sure if I understood everything the controller told me;When I hear: 'Descent on PD FL....' I miss the restriction: 'cross FL ... x miles from ....'.So, how long can I wait with my descent ?Matthias
September 25, 200421 yr Commercial Member a pilot's discretion descent is exactly that, you can start down any time you want. BUT, you are also given an expect clearance, which means you can stay up if you want, but you will need to be at 10000ft 40 miles from your last checkpoint.if you are missing your crossing restrictions, start the descent as soon as you get the PD. if you do that, you shouldn't miss any more crossing restrictions.i'm sure this is in the documentation, rick, you know what page?jd JD Read my blog
September 26, 200421 yr Hello,I read page 30, and after that i decided to ask in the forum, because I'm sure that until now I never heard that 'expect ...', so I asked myself If there could be something wrong with my installation (confused wav-files after installing extra wav-packs) ?Matthias
September 26, 200421 yr You might not always get an "expect". If your last waypoint isn't a VOR, you'll hear "I need you down in 30 miles or less".If you do get a "descend at pilot's discretion to...", then you should calculate how fast you need to get down, and slow down to 250 knots, by 40 miles frpm your destination airport. JD said last waypoint, but I think it's the airport. Also, tbe PD isn't necessarily for the crossing restruction distance (40 miles). I usually get it before the last descent instruction to my crossing altitude and speed. So I get it as something like "descend at pilot's discretion to 17000 feet."
