April 4, 200719 yr I seem to have a problem with RC4 ATC when ascending or descending to a given altitude. If I have my weather settings to anything other than "clear weather" i.e. QNH 1013 Alt 2992 at all altitudes I encounter problems.Example: At FL200 ATC requests descent to say FL170. Having reached FL170 RC4 ATC are saying that I am not at the assigned altitude. My altimeter is clearly showing FL170 I have reset QNH - pressed "B" on key pad - but RC4 ATC are insistent that I am not at the assigned altitude.Obviously, the altitude in the program is not registering the same altitude as my guages. But I am unable to ascertain what QNH RC4 is expecting or at what altitude RC4 is registering.Has anyone else found this problem and what was/is the solution?Any help will be appreciated as I like to fly RW weather but can't if I want to continue using RC4.Rob
April 4, 200719 yr Moderator Hi Rob,There have been several questions on this subject and a search in this forum will probably give you the answer. But to answer your situation it sounds like you're flying outside of the US as you were ordered down to FL170. As the Transition Altitude in the US is 18000ft any lower altitudes would be expressed as feet. The simple rule is if you're cleared to a Flight Level you remain on Std Pressure of 29.92 / 1013.2. That applies whether you're climbing or descending. If you're cleared to an altitude you change to QNH.Pressing B is not reliable and only works as intended inside the US. Instead you need to alter the pressure on the altimeter manually so it matches either STD or QNH.You say you don't know what QNH RC4 is expecting but when you're cleared down to your first altitude the QNH will be enunciated. You won't hear it for a lower FL because there's no need to change from Std Pressure.Hope that helps. Ray (Cheshire, England). April 4, 200719 yr Ray,Thanks for info. I think I understand what I was missing? I,ll have a go using your guidelines and see if I can keep out of trouble. They make it sound so real! Scares you to death!Rob
April 4, 200719 yr Moderator Hi Rob,Come back if you need anything clarifying. Realistic? Excellent, sounds like we did a good job. :-beerchug Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). April 5, 200719 yr Ray, what is all these threats being made for 'busting altitude' and being "met at the gate by Fisco"???? Who are they?....And "do you need special assistance" are extremely insulting. Being insulted is not a pleasure while running RC. Dave Taylor
April 5, 200719 yr Moderator Hi Dave,If you're getting those 'busted altitude' messages it's because you're not flying at the correct altitude/flight level. If you can describe a specific situation then I'll be able to work out what you're doing wrong. You almost certainly have the altimeter pressure set incorrectly. Refer to the manual for QNH and standard pressure and when to apply it.As for them being extremely insulting I think you're taking things a bit too seriously ;-) If in the real world a pilot was to fly an incorrect altitude ATC would certainly not be amused. RC had the input of two (now three) Air Traffic Controllers and they ensure it adheres to correct procedures.FISDO is a US aviation body. Similar to the UK's CAA.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England).
