    I've solved the problem. The fact that I could not even load a flight with the default airport was the clue that finally penetrated my fog.  Simply put, I had to reduce the traffic density, which I reduced from 40% to 25%.  The response was immediate.
     
    Another lesson relearned.

    I have FS9 Airport Design Editor installed on my system. I used it to modify the airports involved. I set the longer runways for takeoff, the others for landings.
