My last real flight sim PC build was in 2010, so....
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcJust got it together, last night it was windows updates and drivers, and got that process going. Im going to take a few days to go over it, and make sure everything is right. I'm still going to add a standard 2TB HDD for general storage and I ordered 2 more case fans because there were slots for 4 more but may not need them. None the less, can't hurt and its quiet as a mouse when it is on. Very nice case for sure.

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI plugged it in yesterday and wow...wow... Gorgeous! Might only be 60hz refresh but in flight sim or other games I tested it looked great. I also have two 17 inch Dell monitors on portrait mode and it all lines up on the desk nicely. I will say newegg gave me a ten dollar gift card because the day after I bought it the monitor went on sale for $799!!

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI've made my decision, and am happy with it. I've always envisioned 3 monitors but after the last few weeks of studying this, and then looking at what it would cost me to do it the way I want and what I would get back over all from it I decided against 3 screens and went with the Dell U3415W 34" Curved LED IPS 5ms Monitor. I spent some time in front of this device at a local store and was really impressed with it. Needless to say I've spent quite some hours researching curved 21:9 monitors vs 3 monitors. No matter what direction I went there was going to be some compromise on features or functionality of one over the other but I feel confident for me, right now, this will suit me the best. You never know, I may buy two more one day. HA... I found it on sale at newegg out the door for $809.99 using promo code DELLBTS. My new PC parts are here and I'll be assembling soon, and the monitor should arrive soon after I'm complete. Happy times.. Thanks for all the feedback!

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThanks Jim, I saw that dell monitor today at MicroCenter. I tried to get a feel for it in a flight sim so I connected to youtube and brought up the videos for A2A. However youtube would not full screen completely which I was not surprised about. But it did give me a slight look and feel as to what it might do in a flight sim environment on my desk.

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcTook a ride to MicroCenter during lunch to stand in front of a 34 inch curved monitor. No doubt about it, the look is sweet. I would be more than content with that for absolutely any use, from any type of work or gaming. My biggest hangup is for years I've envisioned a 3 screen setup for sim racing and flight simulation that may be great for those applications but not for everything else. I just need to convince myself that perhaps this single wide screen will suit all my needs, if that is actually the case. I'll keeping looking into it online... Thanks!

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcYes, but that may just be too big for the desk area I use for work, gaming, simming. I have room for 3 screens (I have 3 now, just not great setup) or a nice 21:9. Even if I go 21:9 I may still have a small monitor off to the side of my desk, in portrait with apps (teamspeak, etc) on when I am gaming.

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcSo, I've spent the better part of the day reading reviews, and technical articles about 3 screens and 21:9 monitor reviews and I come away thinking, I'm going to bed uncertain and confused. I love the aspect of being surrounded by screens in a cockpit feel for racing sims and flying sims but there is that level of complication, and 3 devices that can fail vs 1 device that is pretty wide already in a 21:9 configuration. G-SYNC is too expensive to do 3 times, and 21:9 is very different to me as I am already used to 3 physical screens, both at work (3 19s) and home (2 17s in portrait and 1 27 in landscape). I know I'm going to spend at least 1000 dollars on this display setup and maybe a few hundred more but gaming performance of this display setup and immersion is important, to go with the fact that I work here too. Lets see what tomorrow brings, more to read and research...

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThere is a small piece of my thought process that is very much intrigued by the 21:9 option.

3 Monitor Setup Research
glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcStarting to think going 3 screens that use G-SYNC may be more than I want to spend. Probably look for something that is a quality gaming 27 inch monitor and get 3 of those. If G-SYNC ever gets less expensive I can always get them, then and give my kids a monitor upgrade for their PCs.

3 Monitor Setup Research
I'm looking to create a 3-monitor setup, and they will be connecting to an EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ Video Card. I'm open to suggestions and recommendations on what I need to keep an eye out for, or monitors in general as I start getting deeper into research. I want them to be 27 inches (I'm using one now, and want to maintain that size) plus I'll probably try to add a 3 screen desk mount to neaten things on the desk. I'm looking for this setup to be a flight sim, and race sim environment but it is a gamer PC as well as work when duty calls. I may not play all games with 3 screens all the time. I do work quite a bit from 3 screens at my job already so this will be something at home, in a more of a grand scale. Thanks for your suggestions!

glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcI read a lot about memory, there is a lot of, you'll see these results, those results, you'll barely feel this or possibly feel that. At the end of the day, I played it safe for now and went for some good ram that was on a flash sale. Nothing is set in glue we can always swap out as I feel the need, Not like I haven't done that before. Its time to build. Example, there was a note on the pcpart picker site that stated there could be an incompatibility between the 2400 memory because it went above it recommendations but then there are the XMP profiles with the cpu. Had a beer at 10AM... needed it, just ordered the most expensive video card in my life, the EVGA 06G-P4-4995-KR GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support SC+ w/ACX BP Video Card. Happy 4th of July, feel the fireworks! Luke, no idea on the IOPS.

glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcWhat do you think of the 1tb ssd for main drive and 250gb ssd for swap file? Not what I was intending but read on another forum that this was a thing. It's not what I intend to do but I am always interested in different configurations.

glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcGreetings all, here is where my current build stands so far. its a holiday weekend here in the states so I held off on all purchases till i get back home from holiday. I did have a few items below already purchased from sales, researching, and plenty of recommendations to filter through. I've been leaning towards the H100ic but not settled yet, still reading up on that. I've never run a CPU water cooler and it looks like it can be a fun part of my build. I'm satisfied with the memory and speeds for that price too. Hope to get this finalized in the next few days.

Sale on 1TB SSD, Considering it
I see a sale on newegg for a samsung evo 1tb drive thats $120 off its usual price. Working on a new build, wondering if its worth it to spend that much just for a data/game/fsx drive that is a SSD. I already have a SSD slotted for the OS drive. Its good to have options...

glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcLooking at my tweaked list at the moment I'm seeing the "G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory" of which the memory may be overkill? I'm thinking the GTX980Ti might be worth getting because of 6GB of memory and the need my desire run 3 screens. 8-phase vs 12 phase power design? Higher is better but what am I looking at here with that spec?

glsimpilot replied to glsimpilot's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcDepending on who who ask, you get all opinions from people that think what they feel is right. I am open to all of it, and it gives me direction in researching. At the end of the day I get help from you folks then I go and dig in myself for personal knowledge. Some people say you will not get any real benefit from fast ram, some say you will. I tend to error on the side of, if its not that much more expensive then go faster everything.
