How do I plan a STAR?
Hello everybody,There is something I just do not get about planning my flights. Here is a situation I got myself into this evening:I planned a short flight from Aarhus (Denmark) to Oslo (Norway). Here it is: EKAH RADIS UP615 TOR ENGM. And this is how I came up with it:1. Aarhus has no SID so I chose to fly direct from the airport to the nearest Waypoint on the airway I wanted to follow. (RADIS)2. From there I followed an airway (UP615) that led me to a point from which I could enter an appropriate STAR for ENGM. (TOR)3. Now I have to pick a STAR and that is where my problem begins. For ENGM there are different STARs for different runways. So I assumed that since the runway in use is dependent on the direction of the wind you don't know what STAR you will have to use until you hear from ATIS or ATC what the active runway is. So I decided not to choose the STAR. I printed out the two possible STARs for my flight and decided to tune into ATIS or ATC upon arriving at TOR. 5. But at TOR of course I was still way out of reach of ENGM ATIS or ATC. So I did not know what STAR to pick...Where did I go wrong? How does this work in real life? Thanks in advance,Peter

Navigating with the Beech 1900c
Hello there,I have a couple of questions about navigating the Beech 1900c from Amsterdam (EHAM) to New York (KLGA)in a couple of flights via Great Britain, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Canada.I do not want to use the FS9 GPS system. Seems like a nice challenge. Here are my questions...1. If I want to depart from EHAM I'll have to use a SID, for this flight I chose one that ends at BERGI above the north sea. Now from there all the connecting airways to Britain consist of waypoints/intersections. I can't use those (or can I?) so in stead I want to fly direct to the OTR beacon accross the sea, this leg however is not an airway. Can I file this? I mean, in real life, would such a leg be allowed in a flightpan in such a crowded area? And if not, what is another option?2 When flying from Iceland to Greenland and across Greenland I can only use NDB's. The range of these NDB's however is not very great (about 22NM). This would mean that if I plan from one NDB to another I'll be out of reach of both beacons for, I think, 100NM. Again, what happens in real life in these areas? Can I file that and fly the leg correcting my heading for winds? I hope someone can help me with this.Greetings!Peter

SIDs, STARs, IAPs and how to use them when planning...
Egbert, thanks a lot.I'm starting to understand this.It seems to me that when using FS9 ATC or Radar Contact you'll have to keep fantasising a little. And I'm hesitant to use VATSIM or IVAO because I'm afraid that I will screw things up for everybody...hmmm.What I still don't really understand is this... I am waiting for Navigraph nDac to arrive in the mail soon (anyone else using that software?)and I have been using the demo up until now. The charts in that demo tell me that for the airport ESPC (Ostersund, Sweden) the STAR for RW12 ends 5NM from the runway at an altitude of 2800ft and at runway heading. In this STAR the ILS IAP is sort of integrated (on the approach chart it even sais: See STAR). But there are also other procedures, a VOR/DME procedure, an NDB procedure and an NDB/ILS procedure. All of them starting at a VOR or an NDB at 3600ft. When are these used then?And...what is AS6 and what is an LLZ procedure. As you can tell, there is a lot I do not know that I cannot seem to find on the net, I have been searching, honestly.Greetings,Peter

SIDs, STARs, IAPs and how to use them when planning...
Hello again,Thanks for the quick replies. That was very helpful. Lets see if I understand.Suppose I plan a trip from EGLL (London Heathrow) to EHAM (Amsterdam Schiphol). The runway in use when making my plan is 27L, so I use the BPK6G departure. Current weather in Amsterdam makes me decide I want to use RW22. In FSBuild I can select the REDFA1 STAR to reach the airfield. Here's the plan I file:EGLL BPK6G BPK UM185 CLN UL620 REDFA REDFA1 EHAMNow for the flying part...when weather in London does change I can fly the plan as filed. If the runway in use changes the controller gives me another SID to the BKP fix. When I approach SUGOL (The end of my STAR according to FSBuild) I have 30NM left to the field. I still don't understand what happens next. What I am thinking now is that the controller or ATIS tells me what runway to use. I take out my charts and select an Instrument Approach Procedure. The controller will vector me to the first fix of that IAP which could be a VOR or an NDB. If it is an ILS approach the controller will vector me to the waypoint at which the approach starts. Is this how its done? Thanks a lot everybody,GreetingsPeter

SIDs, STARs, IAPs and how to use them when planning...
Hello,I've been searching for an answer to a couple of questions I have in these forums, but I can't seem to find them anywhere, although I assume that I am not the first one to have them...it's about planning an IFR flight. Actually I would like to know the process from A to Z, but here are the things that I cannot seem to understand:1. When planning an IFR flight do you include a SID after reading the weather report or is your first waypoint in the plan the first one on the airway you want to use in your flight and will you select the proper SID after the controller tells you what runway to use?2. The same thing with STARS ans IAPs, do you wait for the (approach)controller to tell you which runway to use and do you then select a STAR and an IAP or do you plan the procedures ahead, before you start the flight.3. What is the difference between a STAR and an IAP, and are they allways used together? I ask this because I saw that the IAP for a certain airport I wanted to fly into started at a VOR beacon on the airfield and at 5000ft MSL while the STAR for the same runway told me to descend to 3600ft MSL and made me end up right in front of the runway, and not at the VOR beacon at which the IAP started.I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks in advance.Peter

New System - Bad Performance - WHY?
demanmetdeneus replied to demanmetdeneus's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etcHmm, better stop fantasizing about FSX, I suppose.Anyway, here's what I did to make my system a lot faster, yesterday.I seriously considered putting my PC back on Ebay, so I figured, why not try something drastic.1. Reinstalled Windows XP prof.2. Reinstalled all the (latest) device drivers.3. Reinstalled FS 2004.4. Ran FS2004, got 20fps (limited in the hardware settings) with all the display settings in ultra high mode at a resolution of 1280x1024.5. Switched on Anti Aliasing, resulting in an enormous drop of framerates. When switching Anti Aliasing off again, framerates kept being horrible.6. Back to number 1, until number 4.Now I am happy with my framerates, it is very good, even in the virtual cockpit of PDMG's 747-400. Only when there is heavy weather (FS Meteo) framerates drop, but switching to 1024x768 brings them back up again.I hope this helps someone with the same problems. Is anybody else having such issues with Anti Aliasing?I am still wondering if anyone can tell me anything about the Nvidia 7300GS.Peter

New System - Bad Performance - WHY?
Hello,Last week I bought the following system:HP/Compaq dc7600SPIV 3.0GHz with Hyper Threading1024MB RamNvidea Geforce 6200 128MBhttp://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF...f56-472277.htmlI installed FS2004 and was hoping for some good results. With as minimal system requirement of a P450Mhz system I figured I could max out most of the sliders. Not quite. The graphics are dissapointing. I get low resolution VC's and ground textures, even if I max out the sliders. Things like that. And when I max out the sliders framerates drop to 5-6fps occasionally. If I switch Anti-Aliasing on, it also gets very slow.I am thinking, a system like this should perform very well, what could be wrong? Thanks in advancePeter

Buying a second hand PC for the 747-400
Hello there,I am a Mac user using X-Plane, but I have decided that I want to buy a Windows System with FS2004 to run the "Queen of the Skies". This system I found:-Pentium IV 2.66Ghz / 533Mhz FSB (No HT)-1GB RAM-ATI Radeon 9550 256MB Graphics Card.Does anyone have an idea how the 747-400 will likely perform on this machine? Thanks in advance,Peter

New Second Hand Computer - Any Good?
Hello there,In 2003 I switched to Apple Macintosh, and therefor also said goodbye to MSFS. I have been using X-Plane since, which is a great simulator. However, I miss the eye candy and the great addon panels (I used to fly PIC 747 and PDMG 737, but also the emulated fully functional Garmins) I used in FS2002. So I want to buy a Windows System again, just for FS, but I don't want to spend to much money on it.I found this system somewhere for a very reasonable price:Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz HyperTreading double CPU useage, Intel CoolerMotherboard: ATX1024 MB DDR PC3200DVD rom player 16x48 white160 GB Maxtor S-ATA6 channel audio on boardATI Radeon se9200 128MB10/100Mbit LAN on boardThat is all the info mentioned.I want to use FS2004 with the PDMG 747-400, probably the PDMG 737 and the Level D 767, stuff like that. I lost track of IBM stuff, so can anybody tell me what to expect from a system like this? Thanx in advance,Peter
