  1. Thanks for the info. I'll look into each of those recommendations!
  2. Looking to build the best PC possible for P3D v3, with about a $2k budget. I'm currently looking at this combo from NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.2525264 While I've built my own PC before, I'm certainly not an expert on this stuff, so if anybody has some feedback or suggestions, I'd appreciate it before I pull the trigger. Here's a breakdown of what's in the combo: Intel Core I7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80662I76700K Desktop Processor Intel® HD Graphics 530 newegg MSI MSI Gaming Z170A GAMING M7 LGA 1151 Intel Z170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/S USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard newegg IN WIN 805 RED Red Aluminum / Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Compatible With ATX 12V/ EPS Up To 220mm Power Supply Power Supply newegg MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti GAMING 6G newegg EVGA SuperNOVA 220-P2-0850-X1 850W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified Full Modular Continuous Power Supply newegg G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 32GB (4 X 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) Extreme Performance Memory Kit Model F4-2800C16Q-32GRK newegg SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-75E250B/AM newegg WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/S 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX newegg Corsair Hydro Series™ H100i GTX Extreme Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 240mm Thanks in advance, Kyle R.
  3. Hi all, My rig is now >3 years old, and while I'm still fairly happy with it, I'm looking to squeeze out some more performance before I rebuild a whole new machine. I currently have: i7 2600k, OC'ed to 4.6 GHz GTX580, 1.5 GB 8 GB RAM (4 x 2 GB, DDR3 PC10700, 9-9-9-24) P8P67 Pro Motherboard OCZ 120GB SSD (FS only) 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD (Win7 x64) I mainly have three questions: 1. I recently made the switch from FSX to P3Dv2. It's my understanding that P3D makes more use of the GPU than FSX, so would I see noticeably better fps in heavy scenery environments with a GTX980? 2. I know that my RAM is archaic, and slow. What specifically would better RAM give me in terms of P3D performance, and is it worth the money? 3. I'm running out of space on the SSD that P3D is installed on. Any disadvantages to buying a second 120 GB SSD and offload all addon scenery to that (instead of buying a single 240 GB SSD to replace my existing one)? With the P3D sliders in the "medium" range (and not using any "new" P3D features such as cloud shadows, etc.), I get pretty solid performance at the moment. The sim runs smoothly, but with heavy weather, addon scenery, and addon airliners, the fps drop to 12-15 in situations like this (but it's still smooth, and "flyable"). I'll also occasionally get black textures when changing views, and have to wait a couple seconds for them to reload. I'd appreciate any advice on whether it's worth upgrading any of those components, or if I'd be better off waiting and building a new machine from scratch in a year or so... Thanks, Kyle R.
  4. So I went ahead and bought this system, and I'm very pleased with it so far. I set up FSX using NickN's tuning/tweak guide and am getting good performance overall from it:i7 2600K @ 4.6 GHz8GB (4 x 2GB) 1600 Corsair CL9EVGA GTX 580120GB OCZ SSD for FSX1TB WD 7200rpm 64MB for Win7If I get some CL6 RAM, what sort of performance increase should I expect? Occasionally, I'll experience some micro-stutters when flying low over heavy scenery, and some blurries too.My main question is: what difference in FSX performance does the high-end CL6 RAM make over the sticks I currently have? Thanks,Kyle
  5. Thanks, Stephen.I'll probably get a standard 7200rpm drive for my OS, and a SSD for FSX. Are the SATA 3 SSDs worth the price difference over the SATA 2s when it comes to FSX performance?Kyle
  6. I'm looking to build a new FSX machine to replace my 4 year old PC. My current PC was home-built, but I don't consider myself an expert at this stuff whatsoever. I don't mind taking the time to install/tweak everything properly, but I want to get a machine where I don't have to spend countless hours trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of it so that it can run FSX well.I looked at Jetline Systems, but it seems the markup is pretty high (all of the main components for their HellFire GTX purchased on NewEgg would run near $3k, as opposed to their $5k price).Trying to go the somewhat pre-built route, I came across this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=194147&CatId=2846It's a barebone system with an OC'ed i7 2600k to 4.6 GHz, with liquid cooling and a ASUS P8P67 motherboard. I'm thinking that the 8 GB (4 X 2GB) RAM isn't ideal for FSX, and might need to be upgraded to some lower latency memory later on, but that's the only drawback I can find. My ideal budget is $2k, so I could throw a GTX 580 in there, and two HDDs (maybe even a SSD for the dedicated FSX drive), and I could be right around that target.Anyone have any good/bad experience with Systemax, or a system like this in general? My goal is to finally be able to run FSX with all the major addons (REX, UTX, GEX) and complex payware aircraft (waiting for the NGX!) smoothly and without the stutters.Any advice appreciated. Thanks!Kyle
  7. Just installed Win7 x64, followed by FS9, and am having a problem with the cursor changing from white to black. I run FS9 in full screen mode, and whenever I press Alt+Tab to start up ActiveSky, for example, and then switch back to FS9, the cursor becomes black. A workaround is to right click anywhere on the screen, and then not select anything from the dropdown menu, and then it's fixed, but it's slightly annoying. Anyone else have this issue and know what's causing it? Thanks.Kyle
  8. Hey everyone...having a few FSX problems at the moment:I spent all of yesterday reinstalling my OS and FSX per NickN's "bible" and followed every step down to the letter in hopes of getting better performance. I have installed REX, UTUSAX, and GEX, and have everything tweaked so that it runs smooth. When I load up a default FSX plane, everything runs fine, but when I load up my Carenado Seneca or the Super 80 Pro, I get either a terrain.dll error or a g3d.dll error within 5-10 minutes. Just prior to getting the error, I notice some brief, subtle graphics "glitches" such as random lines coming up out of the ground. Also, the sound begins to "crackle" sporadically. Less than a minute after I start noticing that, either of those two error messages appears. What's odd is that my Level-D 767 works perfectly. Because I'm getting this terrain.dll error, it would seem logical that there's a problem with the UTUSAX and the GEX installation, but the fact that the default FSX planes along with the 767 run the sim perfectly doesn't add up to me.I've searched countless forums for posts containing info about the terrain.dll and g3d.dll errors in FSX and have yet to find anything that has given me an idea of what's wrong. I'm wondering if anyone could give some guidance as to what exactly causes FSX to throw out those errors or any ideas as to where to start troubleshooting. Here's my system, if it helps:Intel Core 2 Duo E64004 GB RAMNvidia 8800GT (latest 190.62 drivers)Win XP Pro x64Also, if you'd like to see an error log of one of these CTDs, please let me know. Thanks in advance.Kyle
