Automated Tweaking and Tuning tool for FSX
Hi *******,Thank you very much for your excellent fsx.cfg analysis program. I have a relatively old system (Intel Q9550 2.8 ocd to 3.4GHz, Nvidia GTX 260-768MB, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, single 24inch Samsung 245B monitor, Track IR, Vista Home Premium 64bit SP2, FSX Acceleration) and prefer flying low and slow to appreciate the excellent addon scenery packages, especially ORBX NA and european photoscenery (CHProX, Gen-X UK from Horizon/Playsims, France VFR etc) so fast frame rates are not of concern, but I do have problems with my old setup with blurries (scenery tiles near to the aircraft not swapping to high res fast enough) and stutters. I also use FPS Limiter set to 30, UTX, REX, JF TrafficX, UK2000 VFR airfields and many more. I have installed the downloaded fsx.cfg from your site but without lowering any of the recommended slider changes away from max, and also have set LOD_RADIUS back to 6.5 from the changed value of 4.5 just to try it (see below). Even without the full implementation of your changes I have noticed, so far, a marked improvement, with very little blurriness or stuttering on a long flight across Switzerland and shorter ones in coastal areas of the UK. The only small problem I noticed was that a small number of scenery tiles (mainly water) flashed black briefly as they swapped. Is this anything to do with SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=2?I noticed also that the commentary was happy with my TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=1024. I had been concerned about this as the numbers recommended to others in this thread seem much lower. I had thought that FSX reset this itself as I had been inputting 4096 to accommodate the REX HD textures, but it had reverted to 1024. Or maybe REX was setting this value when installing new textures? As far as LOD_RADIUS is concerned I have for some time used 7.5 (with the necessary step to avoid changes in the graphics during the flight to stop FSX resetting this to 4.5) as it gives so much sharper textures in the middle distance. While investigating my graphics problems I had found that lowering it back to the default did not show any noticable improvement. Even with 6.5 and the new cfg I am getting marked improvements. I would be interested in your comments. Also is it possible to comment on the way FSX updates the scenery tiles in view? I have noticed that it does not concentrate on maintaining high resolution near to the aircraft but appears to start in the distance and move gradually row by row towards the plane. This doesn't appear to help it maintain the sharpest quality.Mervyn

FSX fails to start
Thanks scoob for the helpful suggestions. Number 2 worked a treat. I have noted the logbook fix thanks, but not needed at the moment. You guys saved me so much needless work.Mervyn

FSX fails to start
I have had FSX since the initial release and most of the time it boots up successfully. Today for the third time in the last 13 months I am facing a complete uninstall and reinstall from scratch because the sim fails to get past the initial splash screen - the blue and white one which says Flight Simulator X - Acceleration. Once the problem occurs every subsequent attempt to start behaves the same way. It gets as far as is required for the light on my TrackIR device to show that FSX is running, which normally occurs a few seconds before the main menu screen appears, but stays stubbornly on the splash screen. Uninstall and reinstall took four days last time as I have a large number of scenery and aircraft addons but appears to solve the problem at least for six months or so. This doesn't appear to be a crash - there is no error message or graphical glitches, which sometimes happen mid flight, and the PC otherwise behaves normally. I have FSX Deluxe + SP1+ Acceleration. My system is by Cyberpower with Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz overclocked to 3.4GHz, 4Gb ram, Nvidia GTX260 graphics and single Samsung Syncmaster 245B 24" display, running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit with SP2. I have UAC turned off and my account has Adminstrator privileges. The problem didn't occur running FSX on my much lower spec previous Dell PC. I would be grateful for any light which could be shed on this problem. I haven't been able to select the right turn of phrase to reveal anything using the search function, but I would like to think I am not the only one in the world with this glitch.Mervyn
