About Me

  • About Me
Earlier in life I was a private pilot with some multi engine exp., trained in Conn, USA. Now I'm in the legal field. I prefer to have some control over my plane, and to "fly" my birds, using my head to do my flight planning, navigation and computations (or double checking FS9's flight planners plans),keeps dementia way. I appreciate and frequntly use the AP, but do not really like the full FMS and full auto nagivation experience, good tool but seems more like computer programming and less than piloting. Concerned too much reliance on progammed AP will dull basic skills. Frequently use approach charts and always use noaa charts except when no option. Try to keep experience a real a possible. Not really a "gamer". I'm an aviation history and foreing travel buff.

  1. Thanks, Paul. I'll definitely check it out.
  2. Hello Gang, First my apologies if this is old news. Is there a way for members of the same geographic area to, using AVSIM, to organize local meetings to actually talk face to face, socialize and talk shop? My interest is not just social, but mainly to exchange information, trainings and hands-on, how-to sessions that are hard to do online. And while I do a fair amount of work online in my profession, I'm also concerned that over reliance on online conversations/training will lead to the deterioration of interpersonal and communications skills (already see that in many of the brilliant but entirely electronic comm. folks). I know car clubs do this all the time, gather for lunch/dinner, once a month or so, and this has worked great. So there is no reasons for this not to work for us too. I live in Orlando, Fla., and folks here are used to driving 1 to 1 1/2 hours to nearby towns for meetings (Tampa, Daytona, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, etc) so this is doable. We just need to get a forum or our own 'mail-box' where we can exchange this info., and organize. Of course this also applies to any other geographic area of the world where members have the same interest. And since we are all members of AVSIM there is less of a chance of getting strange types in the mix (i.e., this is not like putting an add in the paper). Any interest and/or suggestions?
  3. Evening gang, Is this add on compatible with windows 7, 64 bit? Does it work well? Any anticipated bugs? Have the fs9 version, a real dream. Thinking of getting the FSX model.
  4. Hi friends, found the solution! many thanks to all who replied, I learned from all of you and i appreciate it. Tried all suggestions, no joy, and just before going for revouninstall I stumbled onto 'magnetite' posting of 09 Nov. 2014 - 12:13 PM, bringing to our attention Microsoft's "Fix it": Worked llike a charm: simple, follow the screen suggestions, and fast. A sleepy 5 years old could do it. Reinstalled FSX and tested it, works as before, which isn't saying much but it works. Giant load off my shoulders. I could not have done it without all of you folks. It's great to have this backup. Thanks again. And of course, a safe, healthy and happy holidays to all.
  5. Thanks Tamsini, I had done just that before, and I did it again, getting this message.. " 1607: unable to install installshield scripting runtime". If it were a matter of just buying another FSX set, I would do that rather than hassle with this. But my suspicion is that I have to 'repair' something within the system or every other FSX intallation, even a brand new CD, will be destined for failure. And frankly, even when it worked in my other computer, FSX has been a monumental dissapointment and giant headache. Problem is, the latest AC addons that I really want ( the DC-8 series 70's for example) are only made for FSX. At least I have FS9, always reliable, thank you Gods of simulation. Keep your thoughts coming and thanks.
  6. Greetings, This may be simple for you folks, and I'll probably embrass myself with my ignorance, but this is driving me to tears: Just upgraded to a more powerful rig, 3.50GHz, 16.0, NVidia Geforce 2.1.4., 64 bit, windows 7. Intalled FSX, had some issues with add on, uninstalled add-on and tried to uninstall FSX. No joy. going out of my mind. After clicking uninstall from Programs, FSX Repair or Remove screen comes on, I select 'remove', and this is when "error 1618 - another installation is already in progress close that installation before proceeding...." comes on. This soon is followed by a screen that reads: "Installshield wizard complete - the wizard was interrupted before MSFSX could be completely installed/uninstalled. -- The system has not been modified. To install/uninstall thjis program at a later time, run the install/unistall again". Tried uninstalling several times, same result. I think that I did shut down the first unistall attempt because it seemed that the system was frozen. Only other programs on this computer are FS9 and add ons and several virus protections, all successfully installed weeks before. Any thoughts?

  8. Sorry, friends. Many thanks for all your help, but tried all of the suggestions, except for assigning the F2 key individually (tried as I can, I cannot see "reverse trhrust" or anything like it in any of the funtion lists in assignments-otherwise I would have assigned this to a joystick button and done away with the keyboard long ago). I am going to try changing the keyboar to a different one and see if its a board problem, althought the F keys seem to work in the word processing mode. But I am going to give it a shot. Could it also be that although I unistalled and reinstalled FS9, it was not a complete uninstall and there could be some unresolved issued still lurking in retained files or folders? Although in my past life I was a real pilot, I am not a computer or FS whiz, so I maybe grasping at straws here. If the change of key board does not cure this, I don't know what else to try. Any other ideas, sing out. In the meantime, I'll keep you posted. All of this might have been academic if I had found a truly working throttle controller with a true reverse function, but the dedicated throttle (saitek) set that I bought when it first came out did not work as advertised; but then again maybe it required more programming than I was able to handle. Eventually it refused to execute most commands. Anything that works out there that one can , you know, 'plug and fly"?
  9. Hi guys,I cannot get the F2 key to engage the reverse thrust function of FS9, regardless of aircraft used. Have uninstalled FS9 and reinstalled it, no joy. I can engage it manually on the aircrafts using the mouse, in all airciraft, but the keyboard is useless, at least this key. All other keys work as advertised. This just happened. Before that it was working like a charm. Any ideas?Yorktown42
