the auto throttle on my 747 doesn't hold the speed I dial in after take off do I need the auto pilot on for it to work?

I am new to this game and am probably doing something wrong. I have the Airbus A380 by Graviton Mediatech and can't get the auto throttle to work the light comes on but won't take over from the joystick lever. Malc
