    Whats your point?

    Did I touch a nerve? ;-)

The original Microsoft FSX was PEGI 3+.

Yes I know that ...and ?

Do you even know what PEGI and ESRB ratings are for?

Obviously or I wouldn't have mentioned them.

They are to ensure that the game should not contain any sounds or pictures that are likely to scare or frighten young children and no bad language should be heard.

Thats exactly my point!! As you rightly said:: the ratings are there to "ensure that the game" is suitable for young children to play. My point being that FSX and FSX-SE etc etc are games suitable for 3 year olds' and over.

You want a flight sim or a first person shooting game?

Well that's very kind of you to offer. ;-) In that case I think I'll choose a flight-sim thats also a shooter..and is also rated Pegi 3, ('suitable for age 3 and over"). Its produced by Microsoft you know, and it's called Combat Simulator 3.

I just hope that my 4 year old nephew isn't too frightened by the sounds of the loud aircraft's' guns, and the sight of war-planes on fire with pilots trapped inside falling to their deaths! ......

Microsoft War Simulator?  Start em young ;-)

  2. as I was browsing some of their twitch broadcasts, they spoke on the topic of "simulation" vs "game" and I thought they provided a very telling answer  ....

"Its safe to say that our next flight simulator will be a realistic simulation style simulation. We want to produce a simulator, a highly detailed brilliant simulatior":

Its good to hear Dovetail confirm that  "..our next flight simulator will be a realistic simulation style simulation" (whatever that means!!)  :P ,

....and that they want to produce "a highly detailed brilliant simulator".

The thing is: Dovetail Games have been producing highly detailed brilliant simulators for years, namely their Train Simulator and Fishing Simulator; Both games are marketed and sold as simulator games and are rated 'Pegi 3', meaning 'suitable for age 3 and over', as is FSX-SE,  which of course is also 'developed' by Dovetail Games...sort of.

Who knows, we might even see a Pegi-10 rating on Dovetail's forthcoming 'brilliant' flightsim? ;-)

This is the dumbest thread I have ever seen on AVSIM.

    Huh???

    ------------------------------

    Definition of "Dumb"

    meaning:...

    * lacking the power of speech
    * temporarily unable to speak:
    * refraining from any or much speech; silent.

    ---------------------------------

    Since this thread has over 17,000 hits and comments, I wouldnt call it dumb;

..or at least certainly not the dumbest on Avsim ;-)

    1. Wonder how that would work out, if GTA was only the sandbox. Like, you can walk, drive and fly around in this tiny world - and nothing else. Nothing cares if you are there or not, nothing really interacts with your avatar.

    -------------------------

But as you may know, in open-world / sandbox 'games' such as GTA, everything cares if you are there or not, since everything is potentially linked to your virtual character - just waiting to respond to your next move as it were.   Think of it as a 'karmic sandbox' in which your actions determine how the environment reacts to you.

That 'empty world' which you described - in which nothing else cares if you are there, actually reminds me of flying in FSX and Aerofly-FS - where cars and ai planes are mere ghosts, with no damage detection or interaction, just an empty world .  By comparison GTA-5 may look small, but its dense multi level interactive environment sure crams a heck of a lot of action into it, or whatever else you want to do.

    --------

As for documentation: you are aware, that (as a rather extreme example), with the PMDG 737 you get the full fledged Boeing FCOM with roundabout 1000 pages in total? I don't think a games manual will ever remotly compare to the fact that you can/have to use real world docs on objects in a simulator.

    --------

PMDG 73 etc are paid-for add-ons for MSFS, not the 'flight-simulator' itself.   Somebody could produce a complex paid-for addon for GTA for example, then supply a technical manual,  but that add-on wouldn't be GTA itself.

    -------

Again, wonder how that would work out for the popularity of GTA if you had to read every car's manual before you can drive it, let alone every planes operation manual before you can fire it up.

    -------

I doubt if the popularity of FSX on Steam is dented by it being supplied with a manual.  I reckon the majority of gamers//simmers kids/adults just hop in a plane and hope for the best... pretty much as many of us did years or decades ago on our first flights.  Some might say Nerds vs gamers ...but its all fun and games either way.

    -------

In simming mode, I want to do it the right way, like in real life,

Then why 'fly' in MSFS?  It has no crash damage modelling, no gear or bird strike damage ...but  instead a cartoon-like 'crash' screen appears if your wing clips a building or another plane etc. ..or even weirder, your plane can fly right through other planes as if they weren't there. .  Thats hardly a real-life  environment.

    ---------

Gaming for me is like watching a movie - mostly without thinking too much, only having fun,

    ---------

So you obviously dont have much intercation with whatever game you're playing - wheareas many gamers find it requires quite intense mind / body coordination and concentration to drive, shoot, fly or survive in whatever virtual world they chose to 'play' in.   The reward I guess is faster reflexes and more brain-power, as shown in various scientific studies.

    http://rochester.edu/news/show.php?id=3679

    -----------

As a simmer, I use the virtual world as a tool to fulfil my dream that I cannot pursue in real life. I have been dreaming of flying for real for all of my 50 years, but it just won't happen any time soon (or ever... Games fulfil the unrealistic "dreams" - and hopefully everyone using them is capable of realizing that.

Sure. Games and game/sims are the same thing in the end since they both allow people to fulfil their dreams on a virtual level.

Real-world environment - real world crash detection and consequences means intense concentration is often required ;-)  >>

  4. In my opinion, that means "we have no plans to release DFS on the XBox One console, but that may change in the future".

    In my opinion, that means:-

We DO have plans to release DFS on XBox once the PC version (and sales revenue) is well established, as per our Train Simulator and Fishing Simulator games.  We are after all a games' company aiming to serve both the console and the PC/Steam market.

You possibly overlooked the most important part of that reply!

Nah! That side of things isn't important to me. My aim is to see any half-decent MS flight-sim/game released on console within the next couple of years or so, so that I can finally kick back with a beer, pick up a controller and fly around on an XBox without having to jump through hoops with PC installs and such, which I've done for too many years  -decades even.

    Call me lazy ..... ;-)

Thanks FSG for the permission to continue with the debate and speculation. ;-) Sounds like you had a good weekend! ;-)

  5. What's the difference between a sim and a game?

What's the difference between a simmer and a gamer?

What's the difference between a PC and a console?

    1. The amount of documentation and the need for a storyline and/or "gameplay"

    2. The simmer reads the documentation

    3. A console just works (at least that was the case in the old days when console gaming was a proprietary hardware gig).

    1. Sandbox 'games' such as GTA-5 have no need for 'gameplay outside of the storyline; instead 'players' are free to walk, drive or fly around in that virtual world in the same way as players in FSX or X-Plane do when they choose not to do flight challenges (missions)..

GTA-5 also comes with comprehensive manuals and maps.

    2. The 'gamer' will possibly read the documentatior in the same way as the FSX 'simmer/gamer' might possibly do  ;-)

    3. A console just works..mostly.

    .

  6. I just don't see a basic fly from A to B simulator as being of any interest to the console gamers, it's just not what consoles are purchased for.

Keep in mind that consoles are bought for all sorts of reasons, including just accessing the internet and playing blue ray DVDs and music. In addition Sony's Playstation for example has numerous 'games' for simply relaxing to, such as the amazing 'Flower' ..plus there are games like Heavy Rain which are a combination of video game, puzzle solver and an actual movie.

...So I therefore suspect that many console users would be happy just flying from A to B in a flightsim, in the same way as many happily fly from A to B in GTA on both console and PC as we speak.....

..or even just walk around in the rain soaking up the amazing ambience ;-)........

For the case "War games: Russia reveals its latest tank is controlled by a PLAYSTATION controller" I would say: propaganda is part of the business...

Yes I had my doubt too ...but it sounds quite legit....

"Instead of a bulky, complex steering wheel, the Kurganets-25 tank has a pad inspired by the PlayStation's which is "easier for a young soldier to familiarise himself with", according to Tractor Plants VP Albert Bakov, and is a form that Sony has spent decades perfecting.   Built to take out enemy infantry, the Kurganets-25 is actually not quite a tank, but it's a bit more serious than an armoured truck. It's currently being tested in Russia and should go into full-scale production in 2016".

    http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/war-games-russia-s-new-tanks-are-controlled-by-playstation-pads-1293927

  8. I am actually more afraid of a sim expecting you to use just a game pad for flying.

I wouldn't worry about it since some of the best military pilots and tank crews around the world use game-pad controllers these days. They are quite efficient and also ergonomically friendly, meaning there's less risk of suffering repetitive strain injury since the arms and hands can be kept close to the body rather than reaching out to a stick.

  9. My point was that we havent even seen the box, so how can we look in it? All we know is that the box is coming sometime next year.

But of course we've seen the box!! ..and it contains yet another Microsoft Flight Simulator variant -

So where are you coming up with this idea that they wont deliver on the date they laid out?

I made that statement based on science.  On the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle to be exact. ;-). .i.e Dovetail will more than likely deliver the flight-sim next year as planned..but we cannot say for definite, as you did.

What logic is behind your statement that they will suddenly decide to develop their flight sim for console when they have been public about their plans with their other titles while maintaining that they have no console plans for their flight sim?

You're clearly not grasping this, so I'll spell it out again.  First of all I didn't say that Dovetail will suddenly decide to develop their flight sim for console.  What I said was: 'reading between the lines its almost inevitable that Dovetail will release a console version in due course, as they plan to do with Train Simulator and their Fishing 'sim'.

... they have been public about their plans with their other titles while maintaining that they have no console plans for their flight sim?

Again I'll spell it out for you.  Dovetail didnt say they have no console plans for their flight sim.   Show me where they said that?  What they did say was ....

"We have confirmed Trains and Fishing will be on XBox. There are no plans to bring [Dovetail Flight Simulator] to XBox in the immediate future."

Note that they said: 'immediate future'.   The Cambridge Dictionary definition of 'immediate future' is: - "The period of time that is coming next".  i.e. 'not immediately'.

The speculation is wild and baseless, people are just pulling these definitive conclusions out of thin air with nothing to hold them up. This is what is frustrating about armchair devs.

You are totally correct!! The speculation is wild and baseless, and people ARE just pulling these definitive conclusions out of thin air" in your world-view,  in your mind.   But in reality, this thread is simply a casual chat among simmer friends about a games' company producing a rehash of Microsoft's old flightsim game ...and the obvious indications appear to be that Dovetail will, in due course, port that flightsim game to XBox, as it is currently doing with it's PC-based  games Train Simulator and Fishing Simulator.    Its not rocket science.     ;-)

  10. Honestly, I'd have no problem flying in a small area like that if the graphics were that great.

Yes not bad at all.  But there didn't appear to be a proper cockpit view with gauges in that video. Hopefully they'll include a fully working cockpit ..otherwise it may have limited appeal for some.

Another issue I have is, once you've grown a bit tired of flying through hundreds of gates etc. in various locations, will the game/sim allow you to free roam over nearby towns, cities and mountains etc?, or will it be like most racing games where an invisible barrier is placed around the racing area, beyond which you cannot escape.  How maddening would that be? ;-)

    https://youtu.be/mpAZOyaA1Cs

I wasn't challenging the quality of the courses, just the statement that they're first to do it.

Sure. But since FSX cannot simulate hitting pylons or cars, or even dipping a wing in water, in cant therefore be classed as a simulation of Red Bull air racing.

Hopefully this new sim/game will rectify that and be faithful to actual racing conditions and hazards >>.

  11. "Red Bull Air Race – ...will be the first time that the world's fastest motorsport series can be played on a PC

Not an exactly true statement, FSX Acceleration has a number of Red Bull practice and time trial scenarios in it's missions. (Although no competitions themselves.)

Sorry but FSX is pretty unconvincing in this respect. Not only is the stock scenery pretty awful but  there's almost a total dis-connect between the planes and the environment since there is no realistic crash damage modelling or detection. Just this again >>

    https://youtu.be/U--sqYjAAmg?t=1m18s

  12. So how can a community of largely intelligent and articulate folks draw a conclusion about what is in the box when we havent even seen the box, none the less opened it?

Even semi intelligent members like myself realise that you don't have to look in the box to be able to draw conclusions as to what's in the box.  Likewise with Dovetail's forthcoming sim/game: ....inference, intuition, guesswork, speculation, hunches, previous experience of the genre, all can play a role in divining future outcomes to a greater or lesser degree..

Einstein for example didn't consciously work out his theory of relativity but rather it came to him in a flash of intuition, a hunch, while he was relaxing.

So there's more to life than mere intellect and sensory awareness. Our modern day science-based culture tends to rate 'intelligence' as being based on 'left brain' critical thinking, yet this is only one half of the coin so to speak. .

"All great achievements of science must start from intuitive knowledge. I believe in intuition and inspiration.... At times I feel certain I am right while not knowing the reason."

    - Albert Einstein:

Did anyone realize we dont have an iota of information this sim other than it is coming to PC exclusively in 2016?

Its not coming out in 2016 for definite, that's only an estimate. We know how easily such projects can overrun into the next year or two .or be scrapped altogether...so we'll have to be patient.

..and Dovetail haven't said its coming to PC exclusively. Like I said, its highly likely that their flightsim game will follow their trainsim game -from PC onto XBox, and this is reflected in their latest statements mentioned earlier in this thread.

But I agree with when you say:  "Everyone just keep flying and having fun"

    Have a good weekend.

  13. So no futher need to buy a water-cooled overclocked i9-7000 whatsoever with a Titan 2 but just having all this done on a 500 $ console

    XBox One specs

CPU = 8 Core AMD custom CPU - Frequency: 1.75 GHz

    Ram = 8GB DDR3

GPU = Clock Speed: 853 MHz

  14. If they get an extra million pounds for an Xbox release then good for them. Why would anyone complain about that?

Exactly!  Plus I've always fancied kicking back with a cool beer and flying around in MSFS on a games console ;-)

As to who would complain about a MSFS on XBox, well many of those folks who claim "its a flightsim not a game".

When it does appear on XBox though, it will be like Windows OS featuring on a Mac all over again   Oh the sacrilege! ;-)

  15. ...which means that the version they are working on is for the PC. So what's the problem?

My gut told me the original blogger's post was inaccurate.

But the blogger only got the date wrong.  As Dovetail said:..

"We are not working on bringing DFS to XBox at this time."

..which means develop (revamp) the.PC version first, and then port to the XBox version, as per their Train Simulator.

    Watch this space ;-)
