  1. You’ve been very helpful, and so have many others in this topic. The off topic responses have provided greater insights to things I haven’t yet thought about in regards to “living” with MSFS. It sets my expectations accordingly, so I really do appreciate how much discussion my humble rant sparked. I’d like the discussion to continue so that it helps others going forward, because not all Google searches are answered directly to someone outright asking it. That’s how I’ve found many answers to my questions on flying, auto mechanics, cooking, and many more things. I welcome any and all thoughts, as I’ve said before!
  2. I have MSFS2020 installed and have opened it up to fly a few times. That’s why I’m asking the question.
  3. I figure I'd be doing the same thing for quite a while, but more transitionary while developers continue to provide new and better airplanes for MSFS. But I still need to take the time to actually memorize the "MSFS way" while also enjoying the fruits of P3D. Also, I don't use hyperthreading, I run P3D on all my physical cores. I have a Ryzen 7950x3D. Because of its architecture, single core loads on v-cache cause higher temperatures, which is something that is meant to be improved on the 9000 series. If I run P3D on the non-3d cores, then temperatures get better but I lose out a little bit on the lack of v-cache (the higher clock speed makes up for this. I also suspect the temperatures in P3D vs MSFS are the result of having more addons in P3D and only running stock in MSFS).
  4. Hey everyone, these are all real helpful responses. I think for about another year or so, I’ll end up slowly switching to MSFS. I think there’s value in keeping up with the times, and also using my higher-end pc on a platform that’s optimized well. I notice my temperatures are high on P3D and doesn’t efficiently utilize the CPU/GPU as well as MSFS does, which makes total sense. I appreciate everyone’s replies and wisdom. If there are any help guides on how to fast track the switch, that would be great! The more people engaged in what’s current, the better it is for flight simming in general 😁 blue skies, everyone
  5. I wish I knew how to make this reply ping all 3 of you who have discussed the topic so far, but does MSFS 2020/2024 feel like a game rather than a sim? I'm much more interested in using my home 'cockpit' as a tool to learn how to fly for when I start flight training at some point. FSX and P3D seemed to have done a great job at this. Do flight dynamics and immersion feel study-able in the new sims? Also, if I haven't even really switched over to MSFS2020, do you suppose I am better off just jumping ahead to 2024, then?
  6. Hello everyone! This is a rant, but I am looking for some advice from anyone who felt this way before completely moving to MSFS after using FSX/P3D for the last 15 years, like me. I'm having the hardest time getting myself to make the big switch from Prepar3dv5 to MSFS2020/24. I have MSFS2020 downloaded and ready to go in its out-of-the-box state, but everytime I load it up, it feels like it's just a game. I think I'm just too used to the way FSX and P3D were, in that they were just raw flight sims that cared about nothing other than flying airplanes and making the world your own. At the same time, the visuals in MSFS are simply too gorgeous to ignore and not smile at. I'm also annoyed at how different the keybinds are as compared to FSX/P3D. I also put so much money into all the addons that make P3D feel life-like, so moving away from it feels pointless, in that regard. Does anyone here resonate with what I am saying? What was the switch like for you all? I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we put a good amount of money into the prior generations of flight sims, so switching is easier said than done. I do recognize that MSFS is meant to be cheaper overall given the amount of freeware and stunning sceneries. Thanks all for reading my incoherent rant. I appreciate any and all responses!
  7. Hello all! I built this PC for flight simming: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bv2wMV it’s a high end build that’s made me interested in learning about gaming performance and whatnot. Question I have is about RAM frequency as it relates to performance. In P3Dv5.4, I see no difference in performance between 4800 MT/s and 6000 MT/s (achieved via AMD EXPO). I don’t understand whether this is because my CPU and GPU are already fast enough to not need faster RAM, or if it’s P3D related? (Does P3D not need 6000 MT/s in order to be as fast as it can get?) Any thoughts would be helpful! I’ll certainly have more PC related flight sim questions in the near future! 🙂
  8. All the responses cleared this up, thanks everyone!
  9. Thanks for this, Ray! I have it loaded in the sim. In the PMDG 777, the FMC won't show runway 7/25 center, only left and right. Navigraph is fully up to date. All prior versions of VHHH are uninstalled. Any clue what might be happening?
  10. Hello all! Currently using T2G's VHHHv2 in P3dv5, which only has two runways. In the real world, VHHH has 3 runways. Have any developers come out with that yet? Thank you, Amrick
  11. So 50 fps at 100% utilization wouldn't translate to, say, 70 fps at a lower utilization? (forgive me, I don't really get how GPU utilization works other than it depends on the CPU's productivity).
  12. Hello all! I built a PC in July for the first time, here’s the highlights: Ryzen 9 7950x3D MSI RTX 4080 Super Suprim X 64 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 RAM Samsung 990 Pro 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVME Corsair RM850x (2021) This PC is a monster at gaming and anything I throw at it. But I’m wondering if it’s being sold short with the GPU, as psychotic that is of me to say. My GPU utilization averages between 70-100% in almost all circumstances with VRAM not going beyond 11GB at a max. While the VRAM usage is within its means, would I get any benefit from stepping up to a 4090 given the utilization I have now? (I’m pretty sure would have to upgrade the PSU to ATX 3.0 for this to work ([~1k wattage]). Im hoping the answer is a very confident, obvious “NOOOO” but I’m having a hard time convincing myself there wouldn’t be a material increase in performance 😆 (performance = FPS, in my opinion). Thank you everyone!
  13. Hello Everyone, So far no issues with the sim. What I do want to know is would there be any real difference in performance if I upgraded to a 4090? I don't really see anyone compare the 4080S and the 4090 to each other for P3Dv5. If my GPU is posting high utilization, then does that meant there is headroom to be had? (The way I understand is high GPU utilization = more available from the CPU, therefore it can better utilize a more powerful GPU). Thank you,
  14. Hello Everyone, I highly appreciate all of your inputs. I believe my problem was closely related to my overclock settings. I had my CPU's curve optimizer set to -15 on all cores and some other limits to wattage, etc. In addition to that, I used MSI Afterburner's auto-OC mode, which put my GPU's core clocks up to 2850MHz and memory at +200MHz. I reset these all to default and just did 3 long haul flights in a row without issues. I do want to be able to use my CPU and GPU to their fullest, but I think I need to go back to the drawing room before I can consider overclocking anything yet. If anyone has some basic tips on what I can expect out of my PC, I'm happy to learn! At least I am back to a safe square-one. Thank you again.
  15. I saw this but didn't apply it since the post was from 2021. I figured by now MSI would have implemented a solution to direct 12 compatibility. Is this still a valid solution that I should follow?
  16. I have it at the latest driver. Is there a procedural way to narrow down which driver will work for me, or is it purely trial and error? What do I do when a new driver comes out? (try it and revert back if the problem comes back?)
  17. I'll let you know, thanks! I'm currently flying through the Detroit area at FL390 on a route from KOAK to KJFK. Cruise FPS are 35-60, VRAM is 9.3GB, CPU is operating at 5.0-5.3 GHz, and GPU utilization is 95% when rendering and goes down to 45-60% when chilled out. I plan to continue on to EGLL, so I'll reload the sim and report back on what happens tonight. Also, I'm flying the PMDG NGxu BBJ
  18. Hello Rogen, I'm not running either of those two things. Is it fair for me to say that the GPU is bottlenecking and not the CPU? I'm wondering if it makes any sense to plan to sell off the 4080S and apply that towards a 4090 if it can keep up with the demands of the sim and complement the CPU well. I really love the way the sim looks with high res and PBR.
  19. Hello all, In mid-July I built a PC for the first time, here are some basic specs: Ryzen 9 7950x3D MSI RTX 4080 Super Suprim X G. Skill Ripjaw 2x32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 Samsung 990 Pro 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVME Here's a link to the full build for anyone who's curious: This is absolutely a strong build for flight simulation, but I'm a little concerned that 16GB VRAM may not be enough when I'm running a whole host of top addons in P3Dv5.4 (PMDG, Aerosoft, LatinVFR, ORBx, etc). I have my settings mostly maxed out and get above 40 fps during cruise and somewhere between 25-40 fps near and on the ground, depending on where I'm at. I really enjoy doing alot of flights in a row, regardless of length. For example, yesterday I flew from TNCM to KBUR, which achieved VRAM of 11.1 out of 14.9GB. I then flew from KBUR to KOAK thereafter and got a Device Hung Error right after TOD while VRAM was at 10.9 GB. My CPU is performing like a dream and GPU utilization is very consistently above 85% and stays in the 90s a lot. What exactly is going on here? Is my CPU outpacing my GPU? Is something in P3D the issue? Should I have gotten an RTX 4090 instead? I'm happy to provide any additional info that may be helpful. For Northern America, I basically have all the major scenery addons from Orbx and a whole host of airports throughout the country. Dynamic Lighting does hit FPS, but it remains at a consistent level, which I would assume means the PC is perfectly capable of achieving high to ultra settings. Thank you, all
  20. You all fixed my issues! (Well... scenery issues, at least) I ran through the order of ops in the link Rogen provided and set water to High rather than Ultra as Drobinho mentioned. I'll report back in case anything else scenery-related happens that is out of the ordinary. Thank you, all!
  21. The airport water problem was fixed this now. Unfortunately, I really like water settings at ultra lol
  22. I tried that, but it did not work ;(
  23. Hey y'all, I just built a PC for the first time! Check it out here. Its a new PC, so I want to make sure I have everything installed correctly and that all my addons place nice with each other. My settings are mostly maxed out, so I'm wondering why I am seeing square patches of land that are either taking a while to render or rendering as water! Here are some screenshots I took on my approach to Nashville. I also added a shot of ImagineSim's KLGA when water quality is set to ultra, if anyone can help explain why LaGuardia turns into a seaport, please help! It is nice to have boats on the taxiway :3 https://imgur.com/a/pY28E48 Thanks all!
  24. Hello all, In my communications settings, I have "Do Nothing" set, but Voxatc still drops to 50% volume everytime it talks. How do I keep this at 100%? I run P3Dv5.4 Thanks,
  25. Hey simmers of the AVSIM forums! On VoxAtc, there are some planes where i am not able to use the FO (First Officer) option available i ran the indexer and made sure the panel is installed for all aircraft in the list. For example, in the Quality Wings 757 and the Captain Sim 767, i dont get the FO option for some reason. Thanks in advance! Amrick Dhillon
