Lately I've been losing interest in Flight Simulation, but I still want to keep FSX (and all of my addons) installed on my computer. However, I want to see if I can "clean up" my FSX installation so that I'll have more hard drive space for other things. By far, the biggest culprit in my FSX folder is Simobjects- it takes up roughly 26 gigabytes of space. After looking at various folders, I found that many of the repaints I had installed for each aircraft seemingly included every single texture the model had into their folder, regardless if the repaint modified it or not. This means that the folder's size itself is unnecessarily driven upwards. I know that one can make texture.cfg files that redirect the common textures to one folder, so that each repaint folder will only have the textures it needs. This allows a lot of space to be saved. Unfortunately, due to the sheer quantity of repaints and aircraft I have installed, the process of seeking out which textures to remove and copying .cfg files into each and every repaint would take a very long time. I remember reading a while ago on another thread where some users were talking about a similar issue- and one user mentioned a program that automatically locates shared textures, (or textures that are the exact same but repeated in every folder) deletes them and makes a texture.cfg file redirecting to a main folder. I spent about half an hour yesterday looking for said thread (and program) but I was unsuccessful. Anyone have any idea which program this could be? (If it even exists)

We ended up resolving this by me taking the .cfg and resaving it on my computer. I'm not sure how.

Nope, it is aircraft.cfg. An inability for FSX to read the .cfg might help point to the cause of this, however.

I believe we saved it as aircraft.cfg in the aircraft folder; we just changed it to aircraft.txt to avoid having problems while uploading the file to Google Drive. I'll have to check later.

Hey all, I'm trying to help my friend install a repaint for this freeware Q400 (downloadable here) but we keep running into a problem where once the repaint is added to the .cfg and he tries to select it in FSX, the entirety of the Q400 repaints he has installed already are completely gone. The only thing we're actually doing is adding an entry to the .cfg. Yes, we're saving it as .cfg when we save the edits. Nothing else is changed, and yet the aircraft completely disappears from the menu. Has anyone got any idea what could be causing this?

Recently I've been looking around for a paintkit for the TFS A330-300. After messing with the Wayback machine a little bit I found a text-only version of the TFS website and tried to see if I could get anywhere with that. However, the download links for the specific A330 paintkit I was looking for were broken. I was wondering, are the TFS paintkits available anywhere else on the web? If not, are there any other good A330 AI models with a paintkit that I could use?

It continues to crash. Luckily, I have other computers at my house. One runs FSX flawlessly with the addons I installed. I haven't tested the other. FlightGear will be on my main computer.

I doubt that was the problem, but suddenly FSX has now been open for over an hour without crashes. I'll try a different flight, and if it crashes again, I'll switch to FlightGear.

It seems like it. The .CFG modification dates are the same as when I first launched FSX again. After 45 minutes of flying out of KEWR in a 747, it's crashed again. AppCrashView shows nothing I do have "Run as Administrator" for all users. Compatibility mode is turned off, although this changed nothing. I haven't added a single scenery file, or aircraft, or repaint. It continues to crash. I'm completely out of ideas.

That's what I've been doing this whole time, even with the reinstalls. However, one specific thing I didn't do was "Change settings for all users" I don't know if that'll change anything since I'm the only user on this computer, but I'll try later and report back with results.

No. I just redownloaded it. I haven't installed a single addon or repaint- just the base, vanilla game. It still crashed. I unchecked compatibility mode for XP but kept the Run as Administrator option. It doesn't seem to work.

I unchecked "Run this program in Compatibility mode for Windows XP" There was yet another crash, but with an error report. If I read it correctly, the failing module is API.DLL. I looked it up in the CTD guide and it appears to be related to OOM issues- I've gotten them in the past, but it always came with an error MESSAGE on-screen. Here, there is none. I'm still mentally debating whether or not to try reinstalling a third time. FlightGear is okay, but graphically could use some improvements. I'm not sure if it was the Compatibility Mode setting, I've had it on since around Spring and before now, I haven't experienced many crashes. However, today after reinstalling that was the only thing I did. There couldn't have been anything else FSX-wise that could have crashed it- other than problems with Windows or my computer itself. As far as the Framework/Visual components, I have them all installed.

This is unbelievable. FSX continued crashing on my first reinstall. I uninstalled it and then reinstalled a second time. I simply clicked "Run this program as an administrator" and "Run in Compatibility mode for WIndows XP- Service Pack 3" It crashed after 10 minutes. I'm switching to FlightGear.
