  1. I believe this is a limitation of blending Photogrammetry and Satellite imagery.

It's two sets of data, taken on different days, potentially different months in potentially different seasons from different altitudes and angles.

Take a photo of your own street in mid December and then try to blend it with an image of your own street taken in June and this is probably how it would appear.

    Rudii,

the main reason I pushed an MFS beta for the 1st time was actually due to my curiosity in testing the prop effects.

They are noticeable, although I do not have any experience as a RW pilot on any of the 3 aircraft that are now using that new model AND a C152 wouldn't be the best aircraft to test "strong" prop effects...

But on both the Caravan and the 350i, prop braking effect is there now, and so are additional dynamic effects due to propwash and torque. I have to test more but I do believe we're finally free from the FS9 / FSX standard formula usied for clearing out torque above 1.5 * VS1 !

Excellent stuff. It sounds like it has a lot of potential. Looking forward to seeing certain third party aircraft take advantage of it but may try the Caravan myself in the coming days.

  3. Are the prop effects not very noticeable or are night lighting and FPS more important than flight dynamics? As we are 8 pages into a thread, prop effects get 4 mentions two of which are about the animation.

Can't move for posts asking for better flight dynamics usually. Asobo bring them and it's like Where's Wally looking for discussion of them.

    Hi,

I hope this has not been coverd yet but do we know how future updates to satellite images wil be incorporated into MSFS?

Google updates their pictures, depending on locaton, about once a year. I don't know how frequently Microsoft does this.

But will they then need to release an update to the world updates or can they just inject the new imagery and AI does the rest?

Thanks for any insight to the matter.

It'll all depend on where the data is sourced from. Microsoft are not a mapping company themselves, they just buy data to use.

For example, much of the lower level UK data comes from the UK's own national mapping organisation; Ordinance Survey.  The low level French data comes from Institut Geographique National. In Washington State, USA it comes from Vexcel Imaging. In New Zealand it comes from Maxar.

So it'll all depend on the availability and cost of the data. This same reasoning is why there is such big variations in the quality of the data.

Google have far more invested into mapping and although they do use the methods above, they also collect their own data. Google Maps has over a billion users a month and mapping is a big priority for them.

I haven't found a wireless flight joystick, and I think there are none presently. But is there any way to connect the joystick to some device which can be connected to the compute wirelessly?

I think wireless is the future and the way to go. Really wish Thrustmaster and Logitech could see this.

There would be no way to currently achieve this with existing devices as the devices would still require electricity even if you found a way for the device to communicate with the computer.

I personally do not share the thought process of wireless being the future for flight sim equipment. It doesn't seem compatible with it's use.

You are essentially asking for your device to have more expense and a shorter lifespan to save the few minutes of cable organisation.

Yes, I'm aware of this setting and it is set to 'OFF'.  have tried it both ways, didn't make a difference.

yeah, I remember seeing group flights in the early days and everyone seemed to be in their selected aircraft on the stream.

Very annoying.   It's a great sim, but its 1 step forward, 1.5 steps back

I guess they may be able to fix this by just allowing models that are not currently in use to be loaded in. Maybe even a user could find a config file edit for this.

I have noticed recently that when flying in multiplayer with a buddy that the sim is not doing a very good job of displaying each others aircraft selection.  We usually make sure that we have the exact aircraft type and repaints in our respective Community folders before the session.

He is flying the PMDG DC-6 and I am flying the TBM.  We both have the DC-6 and the TBM repaint in the community folder. However, when we spawn in, his aircraft appears to me as a generic yellow or blue Airbus A330 (yuk), and I appear to him as a generic PC-12.

The only time we appear correctly to each other, is if we spawn in as the same aircraft type.

Am I doing something wrong (a setting I'm not setting correctly somewhere)?   Multiplayer was a significant selling point of MSFS but this issue is an immersion killer.

    Views welcome.

Check to ensure that the setting named Use Generic Models (Multiplayer) is set to OFF.

But to be honest it seems the sim just handles it badly, hopefully it's something they will improve.

I recall from a large group flight in the early days of MSFS post release that me and my buddies could all see the correct models for default planes.

Just curious, thinking about dabbling in the world of helicopters and got to thinking, is it possible to land on buildings using a helicopter?

Weirdly, I believe you can land on Photogrammetry buildings but oftenn not on hand built assets, at least not Asobo made ones.

I think some third party sceneries may also support landing on buildings or have custom landing pads.

If it helps, the Volanta app shows helicopter landing pads.

The Top Rudder 103 Solo is actually pretty good for sightseeing.

I second this. It's slow and has a model without doors for a great view (may require stress switched off)

Edit; I was thinking CH701 from SWS. Silly me.

Both would be very suitable though.

  10. Do watch that CG, I managed to start a flight with the aircraft unbalanced. It wasn't so bad that it was unmanageable but I could tell something was badly off with the handling while in cruise.

I thought about winds, rudder, my own visual perspective. Got onto the ground and opened up the weights menu and the CG was well off.

Not only did I feel a little silly, but I also surprised myself that I know an aircraft well enough to tell that something is wrong.

PSXT and RealTraffic is the best combination.

Software that is doing work that MSFS hasn't done in 1.5 years, and for which we have paid its customers.
MSFS has sn unjustified silence and lousy logistics on the subject of real air traffic, which have been announced as one of the qualities of the game.

It's listed in the top wishes as Improvements Started, which was posted in the Dev Update two days ago.

The communication from Asobo states the next few updates are focused on improvements like this.

  12. I recall this being one of the most anticipated add ons for a long time before it released but it seems the Kodiak has taken the wind out of it's sails a little.

Very impressed with the modelling of the exterior and the cockpit though. I shall be keeping an eye on this one, I do fancy adding it to my fleet.

@Rudiii I fell for it during the MSFS weather otage and purchased it in a bundle with the other 2 products they sell. In my case (flying in Europe) REX WF was 80% a miss regarding weather representation. In most of the cases the weather was "better" (as in sunnier) as it should have been.

I went many times to LOWI webcams and fired up REX: webcam shows OVC, METAR reports OVC, REX shows many clouds but with blue skies in between....this has happened a LOT.

I also experienced abrupt changes during flight but this is not realy entierly REX fault IMHO but the lack of SDK and the fact that the weather system is still closed by ASOBO.

I kind of do blame REX because I thought that they require you to input a FPLN so they can chech the weather upfront along the route and then inject it way in front of the ACFT....well...this does not happen. Altimeter jumps all around, speed jumps around as wind changes....nope...I'm not impressed by it.

AccuSeason works prety well on my end...

Yeah the flight plan thing doesn't make any sense to me. The majority of my flying is VFR/Marginal VFR and many of my flights have unscheduled stops and changes.

Yeah, I'd base my buying decision on the unfounded opinions of a few users who haven't grasped yet, even though there are 1000000 threads on this, the limitations of an outside weather program.

My advice, ignore all this noise here, go on REX's discord server and ask away.

I regularly switch between REX Weather Force and LIve Weather, sometimes the former is more accurate sometimes the latter (based on meteoblue and windy data).

Also, REX Weather Force comes in handy during the times Live Weather is down or isn't working correctly.

Also, REX customer support is excellent.

I'm willing to accept issues that are down to limitations, I'm pretty forgiving of the sim for that sort of thing.

The major thing that attracts me to REX is having weather presets that are dynamic. I would probably be more inclined to choose a weather preset if I knew it wasn't going to be identical for the entire flight.

Then I would use live weather where I want more of a surprise.

I shall be sitting down shortly to watch some video reviews to get another perspective to Avsim.

I get it, but what I'm saying is the sim is pulling in meteoblue snow depth data and the the meteoblue snow depth map is showing snow in NZ on the west coast opposite Christchurch.  There seems to be a few glaciers in the area such as the fox glacier and the franz josef glacier, so having snow and ice in that area may be correct in the higher elevations.

New Zealand is a particularly complex and challenging climate for something like the sim weather.

Huge variations of climate can be found just kilometres apart.

Such as it being very wet on the west coast of the south island to almost arid dry areas in the north.

Huge swathes of the south island are officially categorised as Polar throughout the whole year with permafrost and glaciers.

I am not doubting their are issues with the sim weather and with the frozen lakes, but what @AnkH has said is too simplistic to cover what the problem is. It absolutely can be 22 degrees in New Zealand with visible snow and frozen lakes.

It won't help anyone feel any better about it; but this stuff is extremely complex and no one has tried this before. Not only do the devs have to understand this diverse climate but they also have to construct it within a virtual world and make it work with ever other data point they have. That's just one region too.

  16. Hello Avsimmers

I would seriously appreciate some help with this.

Essentially, I have mostly lost my patience with MSFS default weather. Of course it may get better in time, but with the downtime, the snow coverage, the METAR pop-in and such it's fairly frustrating.

What I really want is dynamic weather that changes throughout my flights. I want it to be believable but doesn't have to match real world conditions.

    To be clear the most important things for me are;

    1. Believable and attractive weather but not necessary to be based on real time data.

    2. Dynamically changing throughout my flight without severe pop-in changes.

So what I ask of you is; Sell me this add on, tell me it's pros and cons, experiences you have had good or bad, thoughts on any alternative products or reasons to save my money for default sim improvements.
