    You'd use LOC if you've been instructed to join the localizer but not cleared for the ILS approach (probably the most common case these days) or when flying a localizer back course or localizer-only approach (though these are increasingly rare given the prevalence of RNP approaches).

    Edit: What @Fiorentoni said!

    Thank you, much clearer now much appreciation for your response.

    LOC means localiser (which is the lateral guidance of an ILS approach). Do you mean the LOC button? It‘s used to capture the localiser, but not yet the glideslope (GS).
    Use cases:
    1) You‘re cleared for the LOC only, and are supposed to stay off the GS until a certain distance / waypoint. In this situation you can only use the LOC button.

    2) LOC only approach (no GS available). If you use the APPR button, the A320 might fly an RNAV overlay instead of using the raw data localiser. In this case hitting LOC enables you to actually use the localiser.

    3) There is a GS, but it‘s faulty / under maintanance. In this case using the GS could be potentially dangerous and therefore you can not hit the APPR button, but use the LOC button instead.

    4) Some (like myself) like to first capture the LOC only and then hit APPR. It feels more natural to me and gives more control over the aircraft in certain situations.

    5) When you‘re too high and need to intercepting the glideslop from above, this can lead to dangerous descents and might be hard to control if you use APPR mode (with GS armed). Instead it‘s recommended to use LOC only, descent with VS and wait until the actual GS indicator on the PFD says you‘re now at/below the GS, and only then hit the APPR button.

    That said, if you only fly offline you‘ll practically never have to use LOC, since all its use cases are induced by ATC or real life maintainance stuff.

    Thank you so much for that infomation.

    This happens because your system is switching from online (Azure server) to offline (Windows) voice synthesis. Why ? Internet trouble. It could be on your side, it could be on the server side, no idea. If you want to insure you always have the same "accent", there is one easy solution : go to the options and select "Offline" voice synthesis. MSFS will then always use the Win10 voice synthesis, that does not depend on Internet's health.

    Thanks Haddocks 32 I will do that. Thanks for your response.

  4. At first I was pleasantly surprised to hear an English accent  ( ATC and pilot ) when flying in the UK even though the British accent was rather strange.

    The problem I am having is that the accent can change at any time during the flight from American to British or visa versa.

    I recently was flying over Spain and to my surprise the English accent was heard but then reverted to American.

    Any idea how I can configure this to be correct  ?

    Thanks

    As many have stated, the official statement is that the need for the xbox app is a temporary workaround to an issue in the Microsoft Store.  Time will tell if this is indeed temporary.  For what its worth, many have already attested that you can delete the app once the sim has been updated.

    That said, even if it were to become a permanent requirement to MS Store purcahsers, the xbox app itself is really no different than the steam app in what it actually does.  I've read posts of people taking issue with "bloatware" - sure its a minor annoyance - but its not really that big of a deal.  You can easily turn off its autorun on startup and its notification pop ups.  I actually installed this way back in Aug last year on the initial launch day and have never had an issue with updating since.

    I think some of the teeth gnashig is the name of the app itself.  Installing "xbox" leads some to think they are admitting to being part of the gaming world that they want no part of.  I understand why many would feel this way, I would just argue that the fight not to install the xbox app in this case isnt really the hill worth dying on in pursuit of that sentiment.  Its just an install app, and it does help you spend less time fiddling with the awkward MSFS update process and get back to simming faster which is all we're really after anyway, isnt it? 🙂

    Many thanks for your great information, now downloading 😀

  6. Help what has happened, The cockpit controls are highlighted blue when I hover my mouse over them and and I am unable to control the instruments as I used to. How can I get back to how it was before. I have searched all options but am unable to get the FS to revert to its original. What is happening ?

  7. No I cancel IFR not ATC,  the co pilot will transmit this message "cancel IFR at this time "  even when I am in charge of the radio the message will still be transmitted. I have never had ATC cancel a flight. I fly on auto most of the time except for take off and final. Its cancelled from the cockpit.🙄 if the ILS stayed as available on the screen it would be no problem but it dissapears 🤪

  8. My enjoyment is now being spoilt by this message sent to ATC whilst in flight " cancel flight following at this time " This can occur twice or three times in flight. The message is sent to ATC even if the co pilot is in charge of the radio or not. Problem is it's not possible some times to reinstate the original flight details causing the ILS not to function. I have had this problem for some time but just lately it is now every flight and as I said it spoils my enjoyment. Has this occurred just for me or have others had this issue ? what can I be doing to cause this ? I must say ATC in FS2020 is very poor with some totally ridiculous instructions.

    That's the problem.

    Charts. Electronic or otherwise, and you'll avoid those mistakes.

    You have some reading to do before you take your crew and pax up in to the wide blue yonder again.

    This is good;

    So is this;

    Learn. You're the Captain - it's your call where you put your wings.

    If you need some Training on that look here;

    I never want to see you Post that you flew an aircraft in to a CFIT (Controlled Flight In To Terrain) again.

    Yes but to be honest it was a test to see if ATC would be giving me correct information, now I know it may not always be giving correct info I cannot see this happening again as I knew I was too low at the time. Would still have like to have heard " pull up low,terrain " Learning all the time, and I love this FS
