Ok so I think we both have the same issue and is different then others that posted with the solution being the anti virus, I just use win11 default protection. So after 2 hours of trial and error, tried the uncheck Read Only, searching google, trying older versions of the app to no avail. So then I started looking into the error more closely and in my case bam it just hit me. ME app cannot find the file because it's not visibly there but physically there if that makes sense? So in my case (even with show hidden files & folders checked under folder options) I could not see this file, the only way I can see it is my using an app called "Everything" (it's a very good open source file search app that I have used for years), so using it I can see the file and even open it, edit it, save it. So using everything I right clicked the host file and added to a winrar file as a backup first, I also noticed I had a file in the 'etc' folder named 'hosts.backup' so in windows explorer I removed the .backup extension and bam the host file I can see it now. Loaded ME app and no more error about the hosts file ; )
