Why I Built a Realistic Mobile ATC SimulatorI've been fascinated by aviation for as long as I can remember. Today, I'm fortunate enough to work as an airline pilot, but one thing has never changed: my admiration for the people on the other side of the radio. Air traffic controllers. Passengers rarely think about ATC. Most probably don't even realize how much planning, concentration, and teamwork goes into getting hundreds of aircraft safely through the same piece of airspace every day. As pilots, we see it firsthand. Good ATC makes an incredibly complex operation feel effortless. That admiration became the inspiration for a side project that slowly turned into something much bigger: Vectrr. Why another ATC simulator?There are already plenty of ATC games available. Many of them are fun, but I often found myself wishing for something that focused less on arcade gameplay and more on how approach control actually works. I wasn't interested in building a game where you simply click aircraft as quickly as possible. I wanted something that rewards proper sequencing, planning ahead, maintaining legal separation, and using authentic ATC procedures. In other words, something that captures at least a small part of what makes the real job so impressive. Designed around realismFrom the beginning, realism has guided every design decision. Aircraft follow real arrival procedures. You vector traffic onto the ILS using headings, altitudes and speed restrictions, or even assign STARs. Weather influences runway selection. Go-arounds happen if you create an unsafe situation. Holding patterns are available when the traffic picture gets too busy. One feature I'm particularly proud of is the radio communication. You can speak to aircraft using real ATC phraseology, and the pilots read your instructions back. Everything runs directly on your device, so there's no internet connection required for voice recognition, and your voice never leaves your phone. Of course, if speaking isn't your thing, every command can also be issued with a tap. Why mobile?Many excellent ATC simulators exist for PC, but I wanted something I could pick up whenever I had a spare 15 or 20 minutes. Waiting for a flight, sitting in a hotel, commuting, or simply relaxing on the sofa. Modern phones are surprisingly capable, and I thought they deserved a simulator that takes realism seriously instead of feeling like a simplified mobile game. It's still just getting startedVectrr has only recently been released, and there are plenty of ideas I'd like to add in the future. Like any simulator, it's evolving with every update. One of the best parts so far has been hearing from real pilots, controllers, and flight simulation enthusiasts. Their suggestions have already shaped many improvements, and I'm sure they'll continue to influence where the project goes next.
