June 14, 200223 yr All,Can anybody clarify the missed approach in the 757 for me? When missed approach is declared:SELECT TO/GASELECT FLAPS20ESTABLISH positive climbRETRACT landing gearRETRACT flaps on scheduleACCELERATE to holding speedMy problem actually lies in the deselection of LOC/APP so that I can transition to a climb. What am I missing?
June 14, 200223 yr Kurt,According to the 757 AFM under the normal profiles section the missed approach/go-around procedure is outlined as follows:PF = Pilot FlyingPNF = Pilot Not FlyingPF - Push GO-AROUND switch and call "Go Around Thrust, Flaps 20"PNF - Select Flaps 20, verify rotation to go-around attitude (15 degrees) and thrust increase.PF - After positive rate of climb established, call for "Positive Rate, Gear Up"PNF - Position gear lever UPPF - Select/Call for LNAV or HDG modePNF - Set MCP as appropriatePF - At flap retraction altitude (1000 above field elevation), select/call for "Climb thrust, VNAV", or "Climb thrust, FLCH, Vref+80"PNF - Select CLB thrust mode, Set MCP as appropriatePF - Call for "Flaps____" according to flap retraction schedulePNF - Position flaps as directed. Verify missed approach route being tracked and missed approach altitude captured.PF - Call for "After takeoff checks"PNF - Accomplish after takeoff checklistConsiderations:If the flight directors are off, pushing the Go-Around switch will engage the FD "auto-on" feature. The FD will engage in the go-around mode. FD will remain engaged until a mode change (i.e. altitude capture) or the FD ON/OFF switch is cycled. If the autothrottle is armed, the autopilot increases thrust as required to establish a 2000 fpm climb with go-around reference thrust as a maximum. So anyway..it looks like you've got most of it going except selecting LNAV or HDG mode after establishing your positive rate of climb.Hope this helps you out, and congrats on making check airman! :7Mike CollierKPHX

http://avsim.com/flightdeck/images/Radar_small.gifhttp://www.dispatcher.org|Dispatcher' target="_blank"> America West Airlines and proud to be a Beta Tester of[link:www.jdtllc.com]Radar Contact]The premiere ATC adventure add-on for FS
June 14, 200223 yr Commercial Member Kurt,I think the confusion may lie in what you call selecting TO/GA.If you are selecting the TO/GA button on the Thrust Mode Select panel, the A/P-A/T will not enter the Go Around mode. The TO/GA button on the TMSP is only used for setting MAX EPR Target, The Go Around switches themselves are actually on the back side of the throttles on the real thing and they do not appear to be modeled on the PMDG bird (though I don't know how you would model them). I suspect that there may be a button assignment to select Go Around but I seem to missing the Missed approach section from my AOM.Lefteris, can you help us out?Paul:-cool Paul Gollnick Manager Customer/Technical Support Precision Manuals Development Group www.precisionmanuals.com
June 14, 200223 yr Mike,Thanks! And we simmers do it all single-handed!And thanks for the vote of confidence on the check airman qual. We've already got a new 757 Fly!er who wants his New Hire Check Ride!
June 14, 200223 yr Paul,That's what I was looking for...how to get the go around thrust set. Right now, it looks like the only way to do it is to select TO/GA on the TMSP, switch off the A/T and manually move the throttles to the GA thrust limit. Selecting Vref+80 at the MCP doesn't get you GA thrust, and it takes a few seconds for the throttles to spool up to CLB thrust this way. I've also found that until you change the setting of the NAV radio, you can't switch out of LOC/APP mode on the A/P, even after switching off the A/P entirely and switching it back on. HDG HOLD, HDG SEL, V/S and FLCH are simply not available. So, this morning, I had a reasonably successful missed approach by doing this:SELECT TO/GAA/T OFFA/P OFFThrottles ADVANCE Nose UP 15 degreesSELECT FLAPS 20MAINTAIN HDGILS OFFA/P ONV/S +2000 fpmSELECT HDG HOLDMCP SPEED Vref+80A/T ONRETRACT flaps on scheduleI'll be playing with it quite a bit in the next couple weeks, in between my scheduled AWVA flights. I like learning about this...for me, that's what flight simming is all about!
June 14, 200223 yr Commercial Member Kurt,Man, that's a lot of work at a really critical time (especially at CAT III mins. :-) )Hopefully Lefteris or Robert could post whether there was a key assignment used to model the Go Around Switches on the throttles since I can't find it. May have been an oversight. The wonderful thing about those G/A switches was that it not only sets your A/T to G/A thrust, but would put the F/D and A/P into the Go Around mode so all you had to do was clean up the A/C and monitor the A/P. The other option is to do it just the way you described and fly a manual go around. I really need to check into AWVA. Sounds like a good timeRegardsPaul:-cool Paul Gollnick Manager Customer/Technical Support Precision Manuals Development Group www.precisionmanuals.com
June 17, 200223 yr Paul,Please DO check into AWVA. We'd love to have a pilot with your experience on board...I'm sure the check ride would be easy!
