March 24, 200323 yr I will keep this brief. I wanted to express my feelings of Richard Harvey to the AVSIM PMDG flight simulation community.Let us all take a silent moment to recongize Richard Harvey's profound impact on the flight simulation world, as well as the most pasionate flight simulator developer that I can recall. As Richard Harvey's "Hero has fallen" Banner has reached the bottom of the pile, let us not forget how he has positively effected our lives. When I first saw the very very alpha screen shots of FLY! many years ago, I said to myself, "This new sim is going to raise the benchmark profoundly in the flight simutor world." FLY! did just, what Falcon 4.0 has done to the fighter plane market. This was due mainly to the pationate efforts of Richard Harvey (and his support programers as well). When I look back what Richard has contributed to modern flight simulation, I get goose-bumps. His passion drove a dead monopolized MS Flight-Simulation marktet into the 21st century of technically realistic flight simulation that has pushed Microsoft to develope new versions to keep there fair share of the market. Not only that, with the advent of FLY! and FLY!II, Microsoft has had to push themelves to new levels to deal with increasing competion. Thus, Microsoft a sleeping giant was awoken nearly soley my Mr. Richard Harvey's passion for a perfect flight simulator. Without FLY! and FLY!II PMDG would not have been able to develope the increadibly technically detailed aircraft for FLY! and FLY!II. Due to the market, PMDG could no longer develope aircraft for FLY!. Now, PMDG is setting new horizons on the MS platform. With Robert's real world experience and technical knowledge as a proffessional airline pilot, and his increadible support team. I believe PMDG will bring MS to the technical flight simulation level, to that of FLY!. Without the advent of FLY! and FLY!II by Richard Harvey this would not have been possible. When I first heard rumors that Richard Harvey had Cancer, I thought they were just that. Until, the news was broken that he was on his final strech. The picture of Richard on the front page of avsim I almost cried. He seemed so skinny that the cancer had eaten him alive. Yet, his smile was extremely strong, as his undying passion for the flight simulation community. God Bless you Richard!!! If you can hear me, I will NEVER forget you.
March 26, 200323 yr No Chucky, It's just that many of us already have said our goodbys and we do have a special rememberance in our hearts but thanks for the nice letter. Best Wishes, Randy J. March 26, 200323 yr I read it at least two times after your posting, but didn't respond. With no doubt, Mr. Harvey raised the level of flight simming in numerous ways. I really appreciated the panel graphics & function. The use of sectional maps in version one added a professional feeling to the sim. I too, will miss Richard Harvey & his genuine attention to making flight simulation more realistic. As to Microsoft, they have always advanced in their own ways. So I wouldn't exactly call them a sleeping giant. Realworld data-bases for topography, airports, & navigation , count very much too. But I'm sure the competition didn't hurt either!!As to sophistication, no doubt the PMDG will bring there expertise to MSFS also, but they won't be the first. There is the PIC767 & Flight1 Meridian which are also on the upper scale of cockpit function & systems. PMDG will (I assume :)) be adding their own special touches to the sim, which should be very worthwhile.L.Adamson
March 26, 200323 yr Dear Mr. L. Anderson,Let me first say, that I appologize for beating a dead horse regarding Richard Harvey. I see that this community deeply loves his reputation as a flight sim developer and as a hero.I agree agree with the majority of what you have said. The partnering of Jeppessen with Microsoft is fundumentaly important. I did however, love the sectional maps in FLY! even though when I brought them up they almost always showed my plane in the wrong place. Thus, during an engine out procedure, I would fly to the closest airport on the sectional map and walllaaaaaaaaa no airport! At that point my passangers would get extremly excited and I would have to land on a two lane road.I think Microsoft developers are making great strides toward the panel realism that RH created in fly. I don't we will see a scrolable increadibly detailed functioning panel as we had in FLY! for sometime. However, PIC767, DFMeridian, DF737 are VERY good. Are you anticipating the release of Lock-On-Modern-Air-Combat "lo-mac.com" as I am. I can not wait. However, I built a new computer system for it from scratch and will need to upgrade it video card to the ATI 9800 pro 256 mb ddr2 when it gets out in april.God bless you all and have a good day Mr. L. Anderson.Sincerely,ChuckyWanna Play?
March 26, 200323 yr Commercial Member Chucky-All of us at PMDG had a close and personal relationship with the developers of the FLY series- and Rich in particular. All of us have dealt with Rich's battle in our own way- and we continue to do so. Sometimes it is inappropriate to put into words things you can't discribe, and therefor we have chosen to keep our experience personal.Thank you for your comments regaring Rich's place in the community- all of us certainly agree with you.Robert S. March 26, 200323 yr > I don't we will >see a scrolable increadibly detailed functioning panel as we >had in FLY! for sometime. Same here. I'm also a fan of those scrollable panels! I havn't been thinking too much about lo-mac, as of this moment, but I did visit the web site a few weeks ago.L.Adamson
March 26, 200323 yr Dear Mr. Randazoo,I understand what you are saying. I appologize for mindlessly bringing the subject up. I did not realize it would be inappropriate in some peoples perspective to express things. I guess that's one reason I have been told in the past that I'm not the most sensitive. lol Thank you for explaining the situation. CheersChucky
