NG vs Other Boeings Question

Featured Replies

Hi PMDG,I'm sure that this is a Boeing omission rather than a PMDG omission as it's on the MCP and I'm sure you'd have modeled all of that accurately. Does anyone know WHY it's not possible to arm LNAV/VNAV on the ground though? Actually it seems that I can arm HDG SEL but not LNAV or any pitch mode. I really miss this from the 767 PIC, it's quite annoying to have to break your scan to punch VNAV instead of just having it auto-engage at the right altitude. :) Just curious as to weather anyone has any insight into the "why" behind this choice since you used a lot of real boeing info in the creation of your NG. :)-Shaun

Shaun,Real Boeing info states that VNAV can be engaged from 400 AGL up, and that's it, no omission. Keep in mind this is not a 757 767 777, and differences exist.LNAV can be armed on ground - you have to input your departure runway for it to arm.cheersanthonyAnthony MertonPrecision Manuals Developmenthttp://www.precisionmanuals.com

Anthony,Yes I was pretty sure it wasn't an omission on your part, just wondering why it wasn't possible on the NG when it is on other Boeings. Seems like a pretty lousy thing for them to leave out. :)-Shaun

I can arm LNAV on the ground. The LNAV light is on on the MCP and it is indicated as armed (white) on the PFD.Lee Hetherington (KBED)

But do not arm the AP below 400 AGL during Takeoff. See youTill

Yeah I know, but in the real world they have the luxury of having a PNF. :) I just always liked to arm VNAV on the ground so I didn't have to break my scan at a few hundred feet off the ground to do it then.-ShaunEDIT: It's not really a big deal though, I've just positioned the mouse cursor over VNAV after engaging TOGA in the NG, so after 400 AGL I just reach over and give the left mouse button a press. I probably should pick up that nice MCP hardware unit so I can interact with the a/p without using the mouse at all. :)-Shaun

This is a 737 not a 757 or 767RegardsRussell Jourdain (NZL007/ZK-RHJ)

Ok, umm, yes it is. :) I've noticed that too. I just asked the team if they knew WHY the change since they no doubt had a ton of real Boeing documentation to refer to when making the 737. It was just a random question. I am not critisizing anything or trying to imply that a 737 SHOULD work like a 757 or 767.I was just idily curious about the reason and figured PMDG might know because they are the closest thing to Boeing 737 and Boeing 757/767 "authorities" that I know. Thankyou, though, for pointing out that it is in fact a 737. :)-Shaun

You are aware that a 737-400/500 is differnt than the NG series? Although on Southwest they are the same type rating etc. Our FMC is the newest out there and even people with FMC books will ASSUME that there might be a certain issue without the proper updated documents. No worries, I have them all ;)[h5]Best Wishes,Randy J. Smith[/h5][h6]The Next Great one? "I can arm LNAV on the ground. The LNAV light is on on the MCP and it is indicated as armed (white) on the PFD."Just be aware, Lee, that this may not mean a great deal on some aircraft. On the 747-400, for example, you can do this with absolutely nothing entered in the FMC. You may get something in the scratchpad telling you something is missing, but the A/P accepts the selection anyway. I'd certainly be interested to know what would happen in this situation after takeoff (???).Cheers.Ian.

Hi Ian,Depends on your version of the aircraft's MCP and FMC (there are more variations than re-releases of Elvis records). Its always worth remembering that there is such variety even in the same type of aircraft depending on when it entered service and how it was configured. In many ways no two aircraft are alike.Having said that, in the 747-400's I have flown the LNAV light extinguises on takeoff when CMD is engaged. Roll mode then defaults to HDG HOLD. Obviously its not something we would deliberately do on departure, we generally remember such things as entering a course into the FMC ;-), but something thats demonstrated in training. Having said that 2500ft above the deck at SFO for a flight back to Heathrow I have had all pitch and roll commands from the FMC abruptly terminate with all my FMC's powering down and saying night night Vienna (so much for independant backups!) The aircraft very kindly went into SPD, VS'ing at current rate and HDG HOLD and of course we had to divert our attention from the newspaper crossword puzzle ;-) and come back to SFO.hope this helpsAndrew

"hope this helps"Certainly does, Andrew :-) Thanks for the tip.Cheers.Ian.

Shaun, you have noticed that this is a 737NG haven
