August 3, 200322 yr
DUAL APPROACH AUTOLAND
I will assume that you are on a localizer intercept heading and at the proper altitude.1] To be able to correctly fly an autoland approach you must first arm the autoflight system.2] Set the INBOUND COURSE on the MCP.3] From the navigation radio console, NAV 1 & NAV 2 must both be manually tuned to the correct localizer frequency4] When you are on the localizer intercept heading push the APP button, this will only ARM approach mode and the APP button will illuminate.5] Verify that approach mode is armed on the FMA, you should see G/S and VOR/LOC in small WHITE letters.6] Next, push the second CMD on the autopilot. This will arm the second autopilot but does not engage it. ** Please see note below7] Once the aircraft capture the localizer, VOR/LOC changes from armed to active turning green on the FMA. You will now set your heading on the MCP to match the inbound course.8] At Glideslope capture, G/S on the FMA changes from armed to active and turns green. The Thrust Annuciation Panel (TMD) displays G/A as the active N1 thrust limit. Also, the light on the APP button goes off. You cannot disengage the approach mode by a second push of the APP button. Set MCP altitude to missed approach altitude.9] If you need to disengage approach mode after localizer and glideslope capture, you MUST a: Push a TOGA switch b: Disengage the autopilot AND turn off the flight director (s)c: Retune a VHF navigation receiver10] When the aircraft is at 1500' feet radio altitude (RA) the second autopilot engages and FLARE is armed. The Autopilot go-around is also armed but is NOT annuciated on the FMA.11] For a DUAL autopilot approach, you MUST select the second autopilot ABOVE 800' feet radio altitude, you will not be able to engage below 800' feet RA.12] If FLARE is not ARMED by 350' feet radio altitude, the autopilots automatically disengage.13] The FLARE maneuver starts at 50' feet radio altitude. The autopilot trims the aircraft for the flare, the FMA pitch mode changes to FLARE and the flight director command bars are removed.14] The autothrottle reduces to idle thrust at 30' feet radio altitude and the FMA shows RETARD.15] For a DUAL autoland, upon touch down the autothrottle will automatically disengage but you must manually disengage the autopilot.
REVIEW OF DUAL APPROACH
* Before the approach-Set course on the MCP-Tune and indentify frequencies on the navigation radios (Nav 1 & 2)* Arm the approach-Push APP-Verify VOR/LOC and G/S are armed*After approach is armed-Push CMD for second autopilot*After localizer capture-Verfiy VOR/LOC has engaged*After glideslope capture-Verify G/S on the FMA-Verify G/A on the TMD-Set missed approach altitude on the MCP-Verify FLARE is armed*After touchdown-Disengage the autopilot manually
NOTES FOR SINGLE AUTOPILOT APPROACH
1] A single autopilot approach is the same as the dual autopilot approach but the second autopilot is not engaged after the APP button is pushed.2] The Single channel annunciation shows on the FMA and FLARE is not annunciated. flare and automatic touchdown capabilities are not available which includes no autopilot go-around.3] Most important thing concerning single channel approach, you must flare and land manually. 4] The autopilot MUST be disconnected before you reach 50' feet radio altitude. This is written as a help and reference only, I have left out some information for the simple fact that within flight simulator it makes no difference ;) Have a happy landing**NOTE: The CURRENT FMA auto pilot field when using autoland shows single channel if you DO NOT arm the second CMD, but if you do push it this shows as CMD on the FMA. Upon ARMING (i.e PUSHING THE BUTTON) the second CMD, the Single Channel annunication the FMA should not show CMD untill the second A/P engages at glideslope. Not a biggie, just thought you should you hard core types should know ;)[h5]Best Wishes,Randy J. August 4, 200322 yr Yes,Thanks Randy. I just copied all that into my FAQ text file. One of the reasons l come here is to hopefully find nice tidbits like this. :-)Jimmy Richards
