Adding GPS to the panel

Featured Replies

Jacek, just one question:why would you like to add a GPS to this beautiful and complete panel?Don't you use the FMC?Please don't missunderstand this as an assault, but I don't think the 737NG needs a GPS - nor does it IMHO have one in reality....regards,Joerg

Depending on how it's done, the GPS is either just another nav source, like the IRS, or the DME-DME automatic tuning, that feeds the Flight Management System. This is a good thing since the operators only have to update the FMS databases, as all the GPS provides is position and reliability info.If the GPS is added to earlier models, it may or may not interface with the autopilot or FMS.I've flown in a 737 that had a King KLN-89b gps mounted in the pedestal, and the pilot basically flew using it to tell him what heading to set in the autopilot - there was no electronic coupling at all.-Tim Metzinger(Commercial pilot, just waiting for enough hours and $$ to take the ATP/737 ride).

Great question Jacek and thanks for the answer later in this post by Tim. I too, since I bought this product and as yet I STILL don't have an FMC with a SID STAR database, am happy that in the meantime I can ruddy well use the Garmin 530 (the best GA instrument around) to get around in this plane. Great interim solution and great request. I was very disappointed that I couldn't use the 530 right off the bat because of the custom panel - it wouldn't configure with the RXP GPS configuration tool. But now I can use it, otherwise I would be ready to mothball this plane until the FMC database is provided (and I still can't use different liveries for some yet unknown reason).

Does the 737 "in reality" have an FMC WITHOUT a SID STAR database? I think not. In the meantime it's a great solution. Why begrudge various solutions particularly when the FMC doesn't have its own SID STAR database? The Garmin 530 does - and it's a real world instrument.
