September 9, 200322 yr And if I enter a certain waypoint, it gives me a list of a few waypoints and I have absolutely no idea which one to select. There are sometimes a few that are VOR waypoints, and I thought the top one was always the correct one, but I found out by programming a route that it isn't true!So can anyone tell me a simple way of understanding which waypoint to select when there are multiple ones?
September 10, 200322 yr Hi,Usually we go by lat /long position when choosing the waypoint from a list offered by the FMC. The closest to the previous waypoint in your route or the one which -logically- should be on your route. Michael
September 10, 200322 yr This can be trouble for those who do not have Jepp Filestar or other maps. I think the best way is to input each one and check it's location with the EFIS PLAN MODE. I have done this many of times myself being to lazy to look it up lol... [h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. September 10, 200322 yr They should be in order ,closest to present POS at the top to furthest from present POS at the bottom, but the PMDG FMC does not list them in this order.
September 11, 200322 yr Indeed,Most of RL FMC systems employ this logic into multiple same-code waypoint data. The closest one to your current route leg displays at the top, then if two of them have the same position (ie. NDB and VOR) the priority is given to more reliable source - VOR in this case.Don
September 11, 200322 yr Ok the real FMC knows how to do this but the question is whether the sim can be programed to do the same? Question only Anthony would know.. [h4]Best Wishes,Randy J. September 11, 200322 yr Hi, Actually, it is not too complicated to determine which waypoint is closest to the present position (ok, if you have tried it before. Guess it is like flying a NG :-)). I have worked on several projects where the closest point to any given position was needed and it can actually be done relatively simple. If any input is needed, I will gladly offer my assistance...Boaz
September 11, 200322 yr Hi,Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that if someone is planning a route in the FMC he or she should be able to memorize the lat and long of the previous waypoint and immediately determine from the list the waypoint which is the closest to the one remembered. Does this make sense or am I off track?Michael
September 11, 200322 yr Hi, Agreed, that would be the ideal situation. I know this may be a very contrieved scenario, but you could imagine that an entered waypoint is ambiguous and it may indeed not be closes one that is the desired one. Ok, I see the point, my scenario is too far out. I assume that pilots have a chart nearby when they enter flight plans in the FMC in order to resolve ambiguities.... I seem to remember that the 767 FMC (or at least some models used) in the case of doubt which waypoint to choose display all candidates ranked by the distance from last waypoint before the one in doubt and also display the distance from the last waypoint to the candidates. Give a holler if this gibberish has confused more than helped...Boaz
