They allow you to override the FMC without leaving FMC control though - example, in a VNAV PTH descent, if ATC asked you to slow to 210 knots let's say, but the FMC was commanding the standard 250, you could speed intervene to 210 but still remain in VNAV and not have to revert to SPD and LVL CHG or V/S.Ryan
